Bonded windscreen removal tool

Has anyone used a tool and can recommend it for removing a bonded screen?

When my windscreen was replaced the guy used a tool that had a small 1" or so blade at right angles to the shaft. He just dug it in under the glass and cut around the whole thing and it lifted off in one piece.

I have used one of these when my mate wanted to remove a screen from a scrapper to replace his own cracked screen.

It was quite a pull but we managed, both screens came out without breaking.

If I was doing it again I would make some thin wedges to drop in behind the freed sections of the screen.

It you can make sure the screen is warm you will have better success, the only broken screens i have seen were all outside in the cold.

Thanks guys, well its certainly cold here at the moment, about zero, and the polyurathane feels rock solid, I guess I'll wait for a bit warmer weather.

Run a hairdryer over the seal, a lump hammer gets the old one out. Stick plenty of parcel tape on it first and cover your seats

I done the cheese wire thing, as said by @pdg. A lot off effect and bad words.

My local windscreen place will swop yours out for £20, if you supply one and it is good to fit.

My local breakers have the front and rear glass out most of the time.

Go have a chat, bribe with Gold blend.

ive removed a fair few bonded in screens from cars ive scrapped...


i first bought the tool cumbriasteve has put a picture up of.

and then found out from a windscreen fitter that they are used for removing broken screens quickly..

to get a screen out without breaking it you use the cheese wire way..

i got some like this

and a Stanley knife like this...

use the knife to cut into the sealant on the inside and outside.
so you can put the cheese wire though the slot you made with the knife.

i made two little handles for the wire out of solid bar with a couple of holes in it.

certainly gives the arms a work out...

I bought a pack of those disposable knives and took the blades out, I cast an aluminium handle and fitted the blades inside and an old friend who is a windscreen fitter pinched it and uses it daily.

Right I chickened out as the bonding material seems really hard (I may want to reuse it) and a local windscreen fitter said he would take it out for £30.

The screen is a Sekurit, anyone know of a UK distributor for them? MB want £630 for a replacement.

ask the fitter who removes it for a price
i could get one but i'm over 250 miles from you

Well it was a no-show from the windscreen fitter on Saturday morning (with some crap excuse) so I have ordered one of the tools and will have a go myself.

And, the decision on the new windscreen was made for me today, a large crack appeared, I must have nicked it when removing the trim?

I have got a price for a Sekurit screen shipped from Germany, 320GBP vs 630GBP from MB so will have to go with that.
