Yes that's the baby.
I really wanted to know what top look for on ebay;-)
I was talking to an old mate[he's a fat bald old git] yesterday,
we were laughing about leaving the pub and spent hours trying to start a thump thump thingie. We didn't manage to start it, not really suprising as
we didn't have the faintest idea how to.
Anyway I decided I need one;-)
Some of the older ones were more interesting than the benjo, I found video of some bloke with several types at a steam fair.
They work pretty much as I imagined, they are basically an engine, when they come down they compress and you pull a lever to fire the mag. well I didn't realise the had a 'trigger'.
Turns out they were made a couple of miles from me.
There used to be Bosch and Wacker trench compactors .. the big change over to nat gas saw them in use in many streets the foot was about 15 inches long and 9 inches wide. The big heavy compactors were used down the trench and the light one on the top 10 or less inches of in fill and tarmac finish .
Things have changed , it was not a good way to re-fill the trenches and cost local authorities £ millions & millions to repair the bad work in later years.
There was a 4 inch dia by 13 inch long cylinderical fuel tank on the top and the handle was infact a complete off set cage / bar some 1 1/2 inches in dia .
Weight was about seven stone filled for the light version and about 15 stone for the heavy one .
I have repaired hundreds and hundreds of them for the gas board and their subcontractors.
I have just seen the vid of the big foot stamper looks like I am several years later on ... those evil stampers played for keeps on toes , feet , legs and backs .
