Hello all, our 16 year old Bosch Greenstar boiler has sprung a leak and by the time it's fixed it will nearly be half way towards a new one money wise.

We have been recommended an Ideal Logic Max 30kw with 10 year warranty.

The can supply and fit another Bosch as well, probably £300 extra iirc.

Just wondering what Ideal's are like and reliability?.

I think 16 years is not a bad innings and to buy another Bosch Greenstar but I'm no heating engineer!.

Any input appreciated, good or bad on both boilers.

I'm half tempted to repair our original boiler but would never hear the end of it if it packed up again in a couple of years..

You will have plenty of folk deriding what ever you chose

I personally dislike w/Bosch some of them are horrible things to work on, especially when they've not been serviced properly.

Logic is ok, been out ages, loads of spares nothing major, like being kept clean inside, especially if you live near the sea, if your inland no issue.

Very easy to strip and repair, get the odd fan and ignition block fault

Atag, 12 years warranty as standard, 18 years with an extended warranty pack, I personally can't stand Worcesters, they're a pain to work on.

16 to 20 years out of a Greenstar is pretty common, with maintenance, they are a good boiler.

You don't say but if halfway to a new one as a repair I'm guessing heat exchange issues and full replacement HE required.

Other then that, anything less serious, a decent and through repair/service should cost a hell of a lot less and worth considering.

But at 16 years old its a vastly ever decreasing circle as to the cost effectiveness of doing so when it comes to how much working life left-- it can give you.

But a 16 year old Greenstar can be repaired effectively.

I rate highly BW, I do not rate Baxi or Ideal but many thousands are fitted and give good service and reasonable value.

IMO the very best on the market at the moment is brand Viessmann but prices are eye watering but are exceptional units.

BW, Vaillant imo are still the queens of the boilers/combies, rock solid and reliable.

On any combi/boiler ignore all sales pitch of 10 year warranties, you have to jump through a lot of hoops for such speil to be honoured.

If you are going to strap a new boiler to a wall, look also at the overall condition of your existing set up.

If by any chance your existing is up and running, get some CH cleaner into the system, it is by far the least but best money you can spend before replacing.

look for a used online and do a swap of the parts most older boilers are cheap and plenty of parts on them

if you pay 80.00 and it lasts another 2-4 years who cares

it all depends on what part has failed

pumps are easily replaced its certain other parts that arnt

I've heard time and time again the WB's are a pain in the **** to work on (I could name a few Motorcycles in the same bracket lol).

It's a water block manifold (I think the wife said) that's gone, made out of plastic?.

The heat exchanger appears to be OK.

The Heating Engineer says its a ball ache to fit the part, most of the boiler to bits and the part is £450.

So we could have that done and maybe have another 10 years out of it or circuit board could pack up in a month, roll the dice!.

I have a go at repairing most things but a Gas Boiler adjacent to my daughters bedroom is a no go.

I'd say repairing our GreenStar 28i Junior installed in 2009 would be a gamble. Did these have stainless Heat Exchangers?. If Aluminium it's probably on it's last legs anyway.

It gets serviced every year for peace of mind.

I just threw one in the recycling skip last week, you could have had it but I doubt it would have been much good, expansion tank was gone, was badly corroded and at least one leak from one of the blocks, in fairness it didn't look like it had been well looked after.

I suppose even serviced up things will still corrode internally. So probably it's on it's last legs anyway at 16 years old.

Have you tried phoning Worcester Bosch customer care and getting a quote from them.
They did do a fixed price service/repair where the first couple of items were included in the price.
A few years back it was unlimited parts, and I got a Heat exchanger, wiring loom, gasket set and fan assembly during a service, all for about £200!!!
Worth a call.

Used this service myself a few years ago. I guess it depends on how much a new boiler and fitting will cost, plus the hassle etc.

Just wondering what Ideal's are like and reliability?.

I suspect things have changed a lot since then but we've got a pair of Ideal Bucaneers (redundancy from when it was a care home) down in the cellar for heating our house.

They went obsolete in the 80s...

Not a typical house boiler though as its a big commercial one for big houses / hotels (we have 35 rads on the ground floor alone and only 5 are what I'd call normal sized) but parts readily available for it and it's still going strong. Few minor repairs since I've been looking after it but nothing drastic.

As your not going to be the one repairing it it's simply a choice of what your happy with, end of the day it's your money

You really can't go far wrong with a WB.

I can understand the thinking regarding keeping the old boiler going.
I have a '98 (maybe '99) Worcester Danesmoor oil boiler (not a combi) still plugging away, & I really can't see any new condensing boiler getting close to the service it has. I'm hoping I can keep it going for thr foreseeable.

Yep ^^ ...... Worcester danesmoor oil here too...in 25 yrs it's had a few nozzles, 2 flexis, and one photoelectric cell....and I do a cleaning service every 2 years. Impressive I'd say...

Got a balanced flue wall hung iron heat exchanger Potterton in a squat thats 40years old, other than its service its had a few thermocouples along the way but sod all else. I know the efficiency is a tad behind new, pretty sure the hassle free longevity has more than compensated for the energy savings of a new one. Currently being replaced for no other reason than having a new system installed.

my baxi back boiler lasted 30 years only ever changed a thermo couple and used a second hand solenoid in it the only service it ever needed was about 6 times just used to look in at the burner if the flame was blue it was ok. yellowish whip it apart and brush the dirt of the burner job done. in the end it leaked so got replaced
