Boiler Ratting?

Ive just started an apprenticeship welding with Alstom, and have just been bought out by General Electric, weve been told were going into nuclear boilers, I'm just wondering what kind of money to expect on the shutdown etc. if anyone knows? Apparently it can be top doller but not sure as ive heard otherwise?

Totally depends on service, age etc, and bad news is apprentices dont qualify for redundancy and maybe no Notice payments-- or they didnt.

Hi, There are too many variables. Are you on an accredited apprenticeship or just a training scheme? Are they making people redundant? There is a need of two years service to qualify for it. Government guidelines is one week per year of service , any more than that is an ex-gratia payment negotiated before or separately. Companies, especially American ones, are adept at finding ways round these things.

Makes no odds what apprenticeship you're on, it's the fact you're on one, so your employer will probably only pay you the apprenticeship wage.

You say you've only just started your apprenticeship with Alstom so you won't be going anywhere near a boiler just yet. When you are suitably coded and experienced you might get on them then . 'Big money' can be made on the shutdowns but the top paying work is usually kept for the known and trusted hands . Just listen and learn as much as possible , you have a decent opportunity. The rewards will follow on later if you do well.

Its a 4 year apprenticeship, not a traineeship etc. What kind of figures should I expect to earn if getting into the boiler clique? My dads friend has done it for years and said hes pulled 1000+ in a shift before? I know we get site pay if they put us on site as they have said, however ive heard most sites are 'blue book' sites, which I'm unsure of? would a company such as GE send there welders worldwide if they opt. for it? I know these are question I should be asking them but for this first year they've sentus to college and aren't exactly with our employers until next year, thanks for your replies!

I'd say if you've just started you need to be worrying more about getting through your apprenticeship than what the money's like on the other side. You've a long way to go before you're playing with the big boys and asking questions like that will make you look a fool. Not to be condescending, but sit down, clam up and learn for the next four years, and then if you're good at what you do, you'll be earning decent wedge, if you're willing to work the hours and suffer the conditions.

As an apprentice, you have nothing to fear until you complete your apprenticeship. You will a lot to learn, before you are let loose on critical work. Then you have to have the appropriate coding's required to qualify to do the work.

The lad knows all the bling words for being an apprentice. I did a wee spell at Torness at construction stage, I can't remember seeing boilers installed.....lol.

You know what a lot depends on a lot
In 4 yrs you won't be in demand over a 30 year old
There is a big element on playing the long game here
Some always talk hourly rate but forget it's also how many hours you can or should I say work each year and also travel and accommodation expenses and what the deal is on that. Tax? Oil in Saudi made a lot of tax free money for British workers. The way things are going here at present those earning big money might as well buy a spar shop as work PAYE
Doubtless there is work in the UK on power generation over the next few years so it's a good time to train

No money in spar shops our local ones just done a runner told people it was sold locked up and left 3 months later it's now just gone up for sale empty shop as a repossession

The steam generators are often called boilers; they're buried in the concrete bioshield and at shutdown whichever of the usual suspects has won the toss drafts in a load of ****head welders(geordies seem to figure strongly) who climb inside and weld the broken bits for what on paper looks like good money, but when you're upside down in a radioactive sauna wearing BA + a Lidl spacesuit and fighting a hangover to lay a bead it's probably not that great.

Actually very much like working generally two accountants equally qualified one on 38k the other on three figures

IF ,and it's a big IF you get into the boiler clique , a grand a shift is possible, but obviously you have to put some serious graft in for it and it won't be every shift you get that type of money.
Blue book sites are sites that abide by the NAECI Agreement, that is the National Agreement for the Engineering Construction Industry. Most power stations and refinery outages abide by this. Google for more information on this.
It is unlikely nowadays that GE would send welder's around the world. Good welder's are available locally anywhere in the world now. Welding engineers and commissioning engineers though would be.
