boc transtig acdc350 squarewave head scratcher!

hi guys,
i was wondering if anyone would be so kind as to she some light on a little problemo i have. i have had a boc transtig 350 ac dc squarewave which i have had for years in storage and never used. now i am setting up bussines on my own and would like to get it wired up in my new unit, heres the problem: on the machine there are two red wires and an earth! now just guessing i would have thought there should be a neutral if it was three phase, but there aint. also on the front of the machine it says, input, 230/415
amperage 60/80/120 (of the top of my head) i have also had an electrician look at it but he to was clueless. so i was wondering if anyone has any experience of these machines. and whether or not it is 3phase or single phase and how is it wired in?

any help would be greatly appriciated as i am pulling my hir out, lol.

Hello Dan,

this is a common misconception. It is dual voltage, either 240 volt (phase and neutral) or 415 volt, (phase and phase), i.e. two of the legs of a three phase supply.

If you do have three phase available, then use that, as I say phase, phase plus earth (no neutral). You may have four or five pin sockets if you have three phase but that doesn't matter. (Any two phases out of the three, it's irrelevant).

My Syncrowave is similar. There will be jumpers inside close to where the power goes in that allow the welder to be adjusted between 240V and 415V. My syncrowave has instructions printed inside the side cover. Get those right before connecting anything up.

The old welders are 2 phase. They connect to 2 out of 3 phases plus earth on a 3 phase supply, or live and neutral plus earth on a single phase supply. The two power lines should work either way around, though there might be instructions about which way they are best connected. Or there are sparkies on here to ask if you are unsure.

If you are plugging into 240V you'll find you need at least a 40 amp type D breaker to avoid tripping on start up. Possibly more if you want to weld really thick stuff (the manual will probably suggest 100A but that's more than I have into the house).

thanks guys, thats definatle given me some new leads (excuse the pun!) on where to go from her, so basicaly three phase is best if possible, would you bother wiring it in via a 3 phase plug or straight into an isolator, or doesnt it matter? oh what size breaker would you put it on if its wired up 3 phase, 60a?
(or should i say phase and phase, 2 phase) sorry for the confusion i can barely wire a plug lol. ill be passing this info on to the sparky.

Hello Dan,

if you have the sockets, wire a plug on it. The current will be less than on 240 v, and probably a 32 A socket will run it, which will already have its breaker to suit?

I know this is an old thread, but I have an option to buy an apparently work unit with a foot pedal and water cooler.
No leads.
For a pretty low price.
How heavy are they it's probably worth a flyer for €150 the pedal and cooler would be worth it alone.

I bought a lovely old Migatronic TIG transformer welder. My 16amp 3 phase wouldn't even power it. 32amps the same.
Get an inverter type - they use far less current.
