Ok im looking to open a boc account. I cant find information on cost of account and rental prices for gas rental for mig stainless steel and aluminum gases. I have currently been using rental bottles from top parts local friend has garage and account with them so he lets me use his account for bottles there 85 euro each but i could go through it i two days so looking to go for the bigger bottles. kws do smaller bottles so definitely no good. If any one has this info so i know what costs to expect i would appricate it would also be interested in gas cutting rental as well. thanks

Didn't see that on the thread, page 25 shows some recent prices. Where did you see it had expired gunner?

Gunner, phone BOC on Monday and ask them for a price list*. The Volkszone/MIGwelding forum offers are still available AFAIK but they only apply to medium sized cylinders (BOC size Y, about = size to a 20 litre rent free but filled to a higher pressure) and only for argoshield light (MIG mild steel) and pureshield argon (MIG aluminium, everything TIG)

More than 2.5% CO2 has a detrimental effect on stainless... oxidised welds and potentially carbon pick up which can further screw up the corrosion resistance. Typically the rent free sources don't do MIG mixes for stainless, the closest they get is argon + 5% CO2 usually
*BOC rental is based on cylinder size i.e. a large (W size in BOC speak) cylinder costs the same to rent regardless of whether there's argon, argon/CO2 or oxygen in it. The gas price itself obviously varies with flavour (oxygen is peanuts, pure argon is more ££ than argoshield) and there'll be a collection fee applied per transaction if you don't pay them (LOTS) to deliver. When you call 'em they'll send you a leaflet with all of this explained, prices for each flavour of gas and cylinder size and the collection/delivery rates etc. I haven't got a current price list to hand but if i did it'd be in £ which probably wouldn't be accurate once translated to €

Rang BOC 100 euro deposit up front refundable after two years. W size which is the 5 foot high bottle woman told me 20% spec shield for mild steel. Price for the rental of a bottle for the year is 119.00 euro plus 23% vat. (146.37 including vat) The the fee for a bottle is another 114.20 euro. So €360.57 to get up a running with one bottle of gas with a fee of €114.20 per refill/swap for full bottle

A 20 litre cylinder filled to 200bar (about the max pressure from rent free suppliers) is around 4000 litres
To make the math easy lets say the W holds 2.5 times as much gas (it's actually 2.875) and assume that in two years (so we can ignore the returnable deposits) you'd get through 10 size W cylinders. I'll round up the BOC prices and assume their price didn't include collection fees too

star gas €366 for first full cylinder you buy cylinder its yours to keep no rent. ad 118 for refill no yearly fees. price is for 47 litrs bottle for mig welding ive asked what bar the bottle is filled to awaiting reply but will post when i get same. if its filled same as boc i would assume this is best option bar finding out what the exact mix percentage is and getting advice here on best for job. Getting great information at the moment new welder has arrived so need to finalise who ill be sourcing the gas from to get up and running.

Thats the size Star Gas bottle I have.
I only fill up once a year at most , I'd say longer.
So it depends on how much gas you go thru.
I presume the cost for buying the cylinder and refill includes Vat? as that would be about the same as I paid last year.
The Star gas is roughly* 9400 litres (if they filled to 230 bar it'd be around 10800) so 10 BOC size W = just over 12 Star gas so 366 (first cylinder) + 11 x 118 = €1664 for around the same volume of gas
I've no idea how things work with Stargas but am guessing that you don't actually 'buy' a cylinder in that they just exchange your empty for a full one rather than make you wait while they refill yours? Is it a one off 'right to use' fee that (along with the gas price) covers cylinder testing until the end of time or do they charge again in 10 years or whenever 'your' cylinder needs re certifying?
