BOC Argon Bottle

The BOC gas bottles with the 7mm (i think it is) square valve spindle does this have to be fully wound out as in open to seal the same as the bottles with the wheel valve, never thought to ask before

I only ever crack the bottles (both shielding gas, oxy and acet) half a turn and have never had any problems, however this may not be the right way of doing it

Perhaps more important with fuel, but doing it that way you can close them quicker should the need arise.

Just enough to let the gas out was the way I was taught with the BOC cylinders. You can hear when the pressure hits the regulator.

Never wind them right out.
I don't know if there is any truth in talk of damaging the valves by doing so, but it's bad practice on any highly pressurised cylinder to leave it so the valve can't be closed quickly.

1/4 turn seems to do it, half is plenty.

You don't fully open bottles with hand valves either as sounds from the first post like that is what you've done before.
I'm sure I read somewhere that you are supposed to open the cylinder valve fully but like others have said I don't as I'd want to be able to shut the gas off fast in the event of a reg failing etc.

You will not get any more gas out of a cylinder by fully winding the valve out, 1/2 turn and the valve is fully open as has been said above

I did read somewhere maybe on here (not to sure) that valves seat fully open & fully closed, i no you wont get anymore gas out lol

Good, well produced and informative video but remember this is for the U.S. market, the valve is not the same as a BOC one and he also snifted the cylinder which has been discouraged here for years now

Yeah, I don't like the idea of a piece of debris being propelled across the shop with 3000PSI behind it either.

Seen it done on a H2 cylinder and the static generated by opening the valve was enough to ignite the gas

That type of cylinder valve is used on some bottles for mig gas and the like i was just wondering if the same applied to the valve on the Boc bottle

Don't have any spec sheets for American cylinder valves so can't help you out fella, just because an American produced cylinder valve is operated by a hand wheel doesn't necessarily mean it is the same internally as a BOC/APL/AL cylinder valve.

Alll I know is I have worked for European and UK based gas companies for the last 20 years, been involved in welding for over 40 years and the guidelines have always been you don't fully open the valves, but hey, could always be totally wrong

Speaking as an ex commercial diver and equipment service technician of twenty five years including regulators and cylinder valves.... The valves are actually the same the world over, there are only a few manufacturers of cylinder valves and they all have the same design, a pressure seat with a knife edge that the soft seat screws down onto.

It takes no more than half to three quarter of a turn to reveal the gas passage on the other side of the seat and an allow full gas flow. The reason you can turn a cylinder valve open many turns is to allow the threading to be cut into the valve.

So the guidelines of half to one turn are more than adequate.
