Blow torch choice

Hi

Trying to decide between these two options for a blow torch, for general workshop use, freeing seized bolts/parts

i have both types of torches the rothenberger is a good self igniting torch and a bernzomatic . u can buy them on ebay a lot less that that price .the other torches i have are sievert simlar to the machine mart ones with diffrent size nozzles used with an adjustable regulator for the larger bottles as the disposable ones are quite expensive apart from me making an adaptor and can refill them for 50p [http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_t...nkw=rothenberger+quickfire&_sacat=0&_from=R40

I'm a plumber, for my sins, and use the Rothenburger all the time at work and have done for years. A good torch and different nozzles are available if you need them. Hope that helps.

I have a couple of the top one, one is Rotherberger the other Bernzomatic but both the same.

I got my first one while on special at B & Q, £39 including to bottles of gas. That was a few years back.

They are very good, the igniters are always reliable but they are comfortable to use and produce a good flame.

I use mine for everything, plumbing,unseizing bolts,starting the wood burner.

Personally I like the bullfinch equipment British (or was) been around for years, and will out last you. It's basic, simple to repair and works every time, wouldn't it be nice if life was like that every day

I use the Rothenberger unit, have done for a couple of years now - I use it mainly for DIY plumbing, 15 and 22mm copper mostly. Also use it for heating seized bolts although its not my main torch for this. Cant fault it but as said dont pay £80 for it. IIRC I paid £50 including a can of map gas.

I think I have one of those, a family friend died recently, he was a plumber and his wife gave me some of his tools including a blowtorch, hose and bottle. I wish had it earlier as the bottle gets in the way on the one I have been using and the gas is cheaper with a bigger bottle. The hose needs changing and I haven't quite got around to it yet.

Thanks for the reply's , I still can't decide, it seems a toss up between the cost of running and convenience.

Can anyone give a comparison on ability to get heat into bolts/castings, I imagine although the MAPP ones supposedley run hotter, a bigger burner on the Clarke/Bullfinch type could deliver more heat?

Thanks Scott, I think I would lean towards the Bullfinch now having looked more if I did go down that route.

I'm a plumber by trade and always used a rothenberger super fire on site. They're pretty reliable but I did occasional have issues with the igniter. For workshop use I much prefer a separate torch on a hose as it's much easier to get into tight spots. I have a rothenberger one. The gas is cheaper too. I guess for freeing seized bolts etc intense heat is better so maybe mapp gas in a superfire could have a slight advantage there but I doubt if it would be much. Oxy propane would be even better!

I use a Murex Saffire 5 with Oxy/Acetylene. Brilliant fir the job.

How do you check the small cylinder contents? I used to fill Co2 bottles for paintball by weight so once warmed up they didn't blow the burst discs. To get the liquid transfer meant partial filling then dumping the gas to chill the bottle, not the most economical practice!
