Last year I had to move the oil storage tank, so decanted the contents into three steel oil drums. They are under cover of a lean to at the back of the house. Only using the boiler for hot water at the moment, so every so often, syphoned off some oil into a container, then transferred in to a temporary tank in the cellar.
Got fed up with doing this, so rigged up a 12 volt fuel pump to transfer the oil via the original feed pipe. I guess because of condensation, the steel drums now have water at the bottom, so the new pump has transferred that as well. Every so often the boiler runs out of oil, mainly because SWMBO does not heed my warnings to check it, and so the boiler gulps up water sometimes, which of course stops it.
Not good for the pump, and also it it very hard to bleed, and ends up very messy, so I have installed one of these.
Automotive diesel filter and water separator, with primer pump. Works a treat, and bakes bleeding quick and easy, with no mess, and no more water into the pump. I hope.
