Blasting cabinet troubles.

its probably one of those valves that expells the air when its turned off by the looks that cant be wear surely

I didn't notice if the hole was there before I fitted it but it started leaking air badly after 5 minutes so I'm assuming it's not right, the hole is going right through the part number

I've taken the pot valve apart and found the nipple was half blocking the route for the media. Nothing looked blocked apart from that.
I've now cut the threads down a bit.

I've just checked the motor speed and it's 2800rpm so I think that's right???

I think the pump should be running at about 1000 - 1300 rpm or something like that - so it depends on the pulley ratio.
Must admit it sounds fast, but might be OK - could be worth checking.

I tried again but although it was a bit better it's not right, I'm using loads of air it seems but the comp won't keep up, I think this compressor should be man enough to give me a few minutes blasting before I have to stop. I can't tell if it's my set up or the compressor is shagged.
Do I take the head off for a look? That'll cost me £65 for new gaskets though if there's nothing wrong with it.

that's not right, you need to sort the compressor out first

There should be a tank gauge on the auto on/off pressure electrical switch. That rotary switch should not be needed. I smell bodging, was the bloke you bought it off wearing spurs and a bit bandy legged?

The reeds have disintegrated.

One in the bottom cylinder has got a large chunk missing and one in the top cylinder has a very small bit missing.
The piston crown in the bottom cylinder has taken some abuse from the broken pieces but the bores look ok, I get good suction off both barrels when I cover them with my hand and turn the pulley so I think they'll live to fight another day...

Well this at least solves some of my problems with this blasting cabinet!
I've not really used a high demand tool on the compressor before other than a 1/2" impact gun and that didn't work well either
So I'm assuming it's been fooked for a long time but I didn't notice as it was fine pumping up tyres and using a blow gun.

More expense right when I don't need it

Good job finding the issue anyway- those plates are readily available. These pumps are all generic so if you know the type of pump you have you should have plenty of options to order up that plate with Reed valves etc pre installed.

Would be worth checking the flatness of the head too when off and give it a light wet sand on a porcelain tile or other flat surface.

It did feel like there was a ridge on it so I'll give it a smoothing over with some wet and dry and my piece of plate glass.

That lasted less than five minutes!

If this valve is the one by the nozzle I'm not surprised, it's meant to be an on/off switch safety requirement only. Brass doesn't last long under assault from high speed grit.

Some goodies turned up £86 delivered.
Looks like they've sent a full gasket set not just the top end



I flatted the head and barrels with a piece of plate glass and wet and dry then I couldn't help myself and did a bit of matching of the inlet and exhaust ports and trimming gaskets etc just like the old days building race two strokes

All back together and the acid test was timing it from empty to full.
It took 11 minutes 30 seconds before but now...












That's a big difference!

I was looking at fitting a piece of 6mm perspex in mine to replaced the fogged-up glass then use acetate protectors inside but they acetates are pricey!

They are, but rolls of acetate sheet and refix tape are cheaper

the glass lasts ages before frosting and quick to change, i have a big load of acetate but never use it it frosts faster than the glass and makes visibility bad

I use clear florist cellophane rolls cant remember the last time i bought one. Taped on the glass for me they seem to last ages its easy to get my glass out and change it which helps and its only £4 for 10m roll

Cabinet set up today with no problems. Had a little test with it - the media in the bottom of the cabinet is really heavy. Not sure what it is likely to be - chilled iron?
I could do with changing it - what is an all-round medium that lasts a decent amount of time?

The gun is in good nick and the nozzle looks fairly new. There are different nozzles available - different hole sizes. What are the smaller hole sizes used for? Theres a 5mm on there at the moment.
