The ENGWELD ones are nice, we have them at work ... not sure on price but apparently a lot less the adflo ones.

Blenkie1 - when you were underground did you get issued "pit pants" and " pit socks"

I worked underground briefly and they gave us a pack of three pants and socks a month. Horrible white/grey itchey things.

when There was breakdown at deep face I would turn up from the surface in my overalls and all the Colliers would be in a pair of boots , pit pants, a dust mask and a cap lamp! Hot is an understatement.

Funny thing though Dan hardly ever wore a mask, blew brakes out with an air line, had galv/fume fever several times and still manage to pass my medical/x-ray with flying colours. Wore a mask today for the first time in I don't know how long. Not trying to recommend it by any means mind and I think its maybe good luck than anything but I've probably swallowed more dust than most people. Think I will try my best to start wearing them.

I'm the same; because I don't do that much welding I don't wear a mask because I'm lazy and because I started sailing a long time ago I'm loath to wear a lifejacket despite them being so cheap these days. It's just habit for the most part.

I think a lot of not wearing PPE is the culture you get fetched up in. You start doing what everyone else does and gets engrained thats the right way. I started working for a smallish garage and no way would they buy a hoover for sucking up asbestos dust. British Gas was better but you won't really forced or encourged to wear any apart from your hard hat. They did get extractors fitted later in the workshop but had more dust lying on them because they were never used! The mine was just a nightmare to work in with masks. Worst place was one of the biggest companies making car transporters. When a company came to check on noise/dust levels we did no work so the results always came back OK.

No we never got them I worked at private mine and they were given out to NCB ones. A few lads from our mine worked in the Yorkshire mines when the North East ones where closing. The heat was even worse there, a lot deeper working. A deputy told me he used to freeze bottles of water on a night before he went in. At the shaft bottom waiting for the loco there used to be a pool of sweat around you and that was sitting. By the time you got in-bye the frozen bottle water was melted. He told me the first working he went in the workers he was looking after were naked apart from cap, belt and boots and were taking 'Es' as it was the only way they could work and make any money. Desperate!! Kept thinking ours was hot but that must of been hell. Sure he said one lad died because his body could not produce enough sweat to keep him cool. They had emergency cooling areas built after that. Heat and humidty was unreal and I know the times I wore a mask it used to fill with sweat. Your eyes and eyebrows got it the worst. Used to sting your eyebrows and you were constantly blowing it out of your eyes. Even though If I had choice between working back at the mine or making car transporters it would be the mine every time. The mine was a Happy place, the car transporter place was just depression and me, I feel that would of killed me long before the mine.

I started sailing when I was three and rarely wore a LJ. A few years ago I went overboard ( in March....) and had to swim around 500mtrs fully clothed to get ashore. I happened to be wearing a LJ, or I wouldn't be here now, so always use one in small boats since. Couple of things I learned from that: It is very difficult to inflate one by mouth or get rid of bulky clothing in choppy water. Once you inflate the jacket, you can only swim on your back, in that instance the inflation valve failed, so to make things worse, I had to hold the inflation tube closed with one hand and swim with the other. Nackered when I hit the beach? I couldn't even stand up. On the way home, I tossed the LJ in a skip and bought two manual gas inflation ones.
