Hi,
the 'wobbly ram pac' had two noted problems, the first was the connectors on the main board and as you said this could be cured by fixing them together. The second problem was inside the ram-pack where to save space they cut the circuit board on half and folded it with a ribbon cable connector.
The 'front' board had the main connector on and so was fixed to the computer but the back board was left to swing free. If the desk got bumped then the pins would short circuit from one board to the other.
The cure was to carefully open up the rampack and fit a 2" square piece of cardboard between the two boards. No more crashes!
I also learnt basic and Z80 on a ZX81, then continued with a Spectrum and an Amstrad CPC 464 then eventually a 6128.
My ZX81 is boxed up with a load of games in the roof.
