Bike Starter Update

After all of your advice I built a starter from an old car starter that I had in the garage, connected it up to a car battery but it still wasnt powerful enough to turn the bike over, any suggestions/inspirations greatfully accepted.

As promised last time here are a couple of photos and a brief spec:

BSA C15 250cc 1961ish.
High compression Rocket 3 piston.
Lumpier cam from the trials verion.
End oil feed to the crank.
Back to back Bantam fromt brakes forming a twin leading shoe brake like those on the Vincents.
Runs on Methanol through an Amal 389 1 1/8'' carb.

All in all a nice bike to learn how to race on. I am looking forward to it immensely.

A car starter that is not busted should start that easily.

Just make sure you have not got the starter gearing so far out its stalling the motor.

Any pics of the starter & how its fitted?

All I did was connect the starter to the battery and connected a socket to the end, there were no gears. The starter is fronm an old Triumph 1300 that I used to have. I removed the bendix from the end and replaced it with the socket.

Where do you place the start motor (socket) to start the engine (end of the crankshaft or clutch housing)???

The starter goes onto the end of the crank.

you may need to gear it to give more power as in the picture below using chains or belts whatever you can get you hands on

Interesting project I ran a BSA B31 on Meth to do hill climbs and sprints. When you get the mixture and Ignition advance right your bike should amaze people by how easily it starts. On the stand you have engage second gear turn the back wheel backwards against compression, grasp the tyre low down and with a firm heave upwards the bike should start and tick over when warm, cold starting way require a light "tickle" and two pulls. beware flooding the engine as it can very easily hydraulic lock. looks like loads of fun!

The starter won't crank your engine with direct-drive, you need to gear it down.

Some starter motors have a reduction gearbox built in, but even so there still the reduction effect of the starter pinion to ring gear ratio....

I'd be inclined to rethink the problem and look at a rear wheel friction powered starter drum.

Surely asking a car starter to turn an engine over, connected directly to the crank is asking too much. The ratio between the starter and the ring gear on a flywheel must be at least 10:1.

Looks interesting............easy way to start bikes like this is to make up a set of starting rollers, which can be made out of old industrial conveyor belt rollers, and powered up by a car or van.

A heavy 24v commercial starter motor with a reduction gear set up will also work, and this is the type of thing most people use on drag bikes............

Whatever. To quote my 14 year old brat, the stock answer to old fogies with too much information.
What a beautiful bike, total simplicity, nothing fancy or pants at all, just pure brutal (relatively) functionalism.
I think you ought to allow me to test drive it.
At least try and get it featured in Back Street Heroes.
There loads of tarts parlour bikes based on this stripped back style, but most of them are hideous. So there. I reckon the editor would love this.

I love the beautifully upholstered seat, true attention to detail.

Thanks for the advice guys, I am currently trying to scrounge some suitable sprockets to sort the gearing out so that perhaps the starter will work.

Thanks for the kind words about the bike, it is only intended for the track and after the problems that I had registering the one below, I wont be doing it again.

Off to pick up some Methanol to try spinning the back wheel then I wont need the Starter.

Will let you know how I get on over the weekend.

actually you might be able to get it to work as direct drive if you put it on a dolly with a heavy weight on it and spun it up then shoved it into the rear tyre.

I mean real classy, like a naked tart with big tits and a sword, or maybe an airbrushed wolf with vampire fangs.

I think you really ought to go that extra mile.

I have given your suggestion some considerable thought and you are quite right it does need something extra, auditions for a suitably endowed model start tomorrow and are expected to take a considerable time, it is important to get all of the proportions right after all!!

That wouldn't stop the guys at BSH been interested, they feature plenty of bikes not intended for street use.
