What are your thoughts?

I've decided that in one of my workshops I have a worktop that I never use, so I can take it out and replace it with racking and get some of my tat tidy!

I have no problem with the Dexion type apart from the price! (and I've missed all the cheap stuff on here!)

The racking itself is not so bad,
I helped a mate rack 3 sides of a double garage with it.
The chipboard shelves are pretty weak though. They don't like any moisture and, even if dry, they sag under minimal loading. Not to bad if you can fill them with storage boxes that span over the edges of the steel.

Ps, I think he got the storage boxes with the racking and they all got filled with books so a fair bit of weight and they have held up ok although it's more storage than actuall use

Horses for courses really. Since I have a flypress, anvil, play with motorcycle engines and collect large vices; any shelving or workbench has to take a pounding. Much of my playtime in the shed involves heavy and dense objects.

So UDL is neither here nor there for me, it needs to be strong and more importantly, damage resistant. I'm sure those types of lightweight shelving units are fine for storage from new but a couple of dings and their weight carrying capacity will be drastically reduced. It's not just the load carrying capacity it needs to withstand, I am quite likely to barge into it with any number of heavy objects at one time or another.

Now I come to think of it, there's not a workbench in any of my sheds that couldn't easily take an anvil! Assuming I could get it up there. The same is true for my shelving and I am not kidding.

Shuttering ply and 2x2 tan would be far stronger.

BigDug racking comes in various grades and capacities. I've got it round three sides of double garage carrying old and heavy lawnmowers etc which it does very well. prices do appear to be negotiable though!

i think i have some of that stuff, the frame is spot on and have even stood on it before now to reach the top but my shelves are plywood, i presume the previous owner outfitted it probably because of the above regarding chipboard being naff.

I bought some longspan racking used from eBay. Not a lot more expensive but larger and a lot more sturdy.

If it's anything like the knock together racking from Lidl it's incredibly light weight.
It does it's job but I reckon if it was fully loaded and you accidentally knocked one of the legs the whole thing would collapse like a house of cards.

Yes, but no luck so far, not within a reasonable distance. There are some bays in Coventry, but that's quite a stretch for me.

I've got about 20 bays of that racking. Its not the best and should only be used for very light weight storage. The chipboard is very loose density and sucks up moisture quickly bowing. I got it when it was on offer plus 20% PayPal discount through BigDugs ebay store. I wouldn't like to pay anymore than I did for it.

In short - if its not going to be used and relied upon for storing heavy or expensive stuff its ok (ish) and must be in a dry location with no damp.

+1 to all the above the BD stuff can take some weight abuse but the boards do suck up moisture, spill't some dry crystal plant feed on one and near made a hole in one of the boards.
I'm sure I overload my BD racks but I have got them on wee L brackets to the wall which makes a big difference to stability and stops wobbling.

In the end I went for eBay and got 5 bays (20' or so) of 3' wide and 6' tall racking with steel shelves for £120. I need to go to Coventry to collect, but I reckon it will be worth it.
