my boy had day of school today, due to teacher training.
this morning he said im bored.
told him there was a load of 20x50 waiting to be cut and drilled to make bars for a load of sash clamp heads we got from car boot.
says ok, tell him what i want of he goes, comes back with sketch to check hes got it right in his head.
thought at least ill get one made.
anyway 8 2m bars later each with 24 holes later he declares he hates keyless chucks.

must say i am well impressed with his work all holes measured perfectly, de-burred and ends of bars all sanded smooth.

and hes only 13.
am well proud of him.
have made his day as told him he can go to machine mart tomorrow and ill give him £20 to spend.

oh yes he used hand drill not enough room to drill in the press.
hes already decided hes buying himself some more welding clamps.

What a hero he is. I wish my son was 13 again. This time round I would corrupt him more so as to ignore everything his Mum said, rather than just some of it.

I like keyless chucks. How many sore hands and dents in the palm did I suffer with chuck keys, especially the big one for the 16mm chuck in the pillar drill? And they all wear eventually and start to slip. I bought and fitted a 13mm keyless chuck for the pillar drill about 17 years ago (yes it was 1995) and never looked back. Just about now it's getting tricky and about 1 in 5 times I have to use 2 sets of water-pump grips to release or tighten it. I need a new one yes but 17 years is fair service.

I've had a moderate go at releasing it from the spindle but no joy. I remember it was damned hard all those years ago and need to take a breath and become more persistent (violent?) with it. It's a Meddings Drilltru. The only problem is as and when I do release it, I will be duty bound to buy another there and then ............ and aren't they expensive? I might try for a 16mm keyless chuck this time (gulp).

I don't hate keyless chucks, they are alright on rechargeable drills but anything with a lot of torque and they are hard to tighten enough to hold the larger drills and spin and burr the drill when it sticks. I bought a new Aldi hand drill for the shed last week and it has a keyed chuck, quite pleased with the power of it as well. Credit to the boy for getting the job done.

I can't see any sense in buying a £15 drill and fitting a £150 chuck to it just to drill pop rivets out in the shed.

just pointing out that a quality keyless chuck will grip as good as or better than any keyed chuck

I've found the one on my makita li-Ion really good for drills up to 10mm. It has a sort of ratchet lock when It's nearly tight.

I've had a Metabo keyless on my Meddings Driltru for around 18(?) yrs and it is still fine. Only trouble I get is using biggish hole cutters, when I might need a pipe wrench to undo it. No big force, just the nearest tool when too tight for hand.
Best chuck I have used.

When my eldest was that age he was into electrics and electronics. He built a burglar alarm for the workshop at the top of the garden. He also installed lights all over the garden. |When the alarm went off all these lights flashed on and off. Problem was they were the 500W security lamps.........we didnt need a Burglar the sight of the leccy meter spinning a warp speed was enough

When my eldest was 13 or 14 I set my little Cebora pocket mig up and put two bits of steel in the vice and told him what to do, he laid down a lovely weld, first time he'd ever had a go (and the last! )..

I've welded his pug 205 GTi's (Two of!) and his Saxo VTR, he could have done the job himself i'm sure
