Hi Guys

Just thought I’d check in from Sunny Spain and say a quick Hello to everyone!

Very warm here with temperatures ranging from 29 to 36* so far. Too hot for me if I’m honest, but it gives me an excuse to do nothing!

When we arrived I’ll admit that I wasn’t impressed. By nature I’m not a people person and all those villas so close was a bit of a worry. Worked out well tho as there are only 2 other families here! Most days we have the pool to ourselves!

Can I detect the slightest hint of sun-cream oil on the surface of the pool ?

Or this view. Don't be fooled as luckily grass and weeds are the same colour and the spares department is just out of sight awaiting a jumbo skip to be ordered. Garden just big enough to be unmanageable.

I’m slathered in the stuff, so I’m probably leaving a big oil slick behind me!

we were up early, 6 to do a car boot......main road into the local fishing village.....
car boot right on the harbour.....
5.30 now, cooling down now ....only 37.......lol...
this week even had to water the cactus...they're not on the irregation system....

Where I come from in NZ sent many soldiers to Crete. I visited last year,wasn't very impressed with the place sadly but at least got to experience the fantastic shooting light just before dusk.

There's one that covers it very well - not just the invasion, but prior events and the resistance, political interference, and withdrawal "Crete: The battle and the resistance" by Anthony Beevor (not everyone's cup of tea!) The Memoirs of Gen. Student give some background, as long as you remember it was one of his 'pet projects' and the potential price of failure for him... More matter-of-fact is "Fallschirmjäger!: A Collection of Firsthand Accounts and Diaries by German Paratrooper Veterans from the Second World War"
There is another that I've yet to read - "The Hill: The brutal fight for Hill 107 in the Battle of Crete" this vital battle could have seen the Germans pushed into the sea, even with Freyberg's ineptitude (which seeped down to other commanders too). There is another book which covers one of the regiments involved - Crete is about 10-15% of the books content but it does give very good background on the training, mindset and use of Fallschirmjager. "The Lions Of Carentan: Fallschirmjager Regiment 6, 1943–1945"

I was lucky enough to have met Charles Upham VC ,a few times. He was the great Uncle to a boyhood chum who lived down the road from me growing up. The guy who drove the truck when him and his men broke out from Crete lived in the same area.
