Best way to make one of these

this is on my boys scooter and hold the springs that hold up the stand.
i managed to get the thread bit out the hole using a scriber, pushing it round

i have a piece of larger hex bar, as in the picture, came off a paper shredder..

now i could either .....

turn a new bit of hex bar down to 6mm and thread it.

or drill 5mm hole in end of hex bar and tap it to 6mm
then get a 6mm HT steel bolt and cut a bit off and thread it into the end and use some thread lock

so what would be the best or strongest way....

is it threaded all the way through ? if so just get some studding connectors see here

no it isn't threaded all the way through

i suppose i could just face the old on off then drill and tap it.
but was just going to make a new one from the thicker hex bar.

there would be nothing stopping you using a bolt of the same overall length, put some nuts on making up the hex part lock them against each other then fit as original

Drill and tap the original part and cut the head off a HT set screw to save the ballache of machining a complete part. I would look into why it broke too, with an angle poise lamp and 100w bulb to get the truth......

You sure that 6mm looks more like 8mm to me
I would use as snooper says a long nut/ stud joiner and screw a set bolt right through then lock a nut on top, or damage the thread of the bolt slightly with a hammer as it gets close to the point you want it to lock up a drop of locktite on the damaged thread wind last little bit in till tight, job done.

i guess i could use a bolt and some nuts , but prefer for it too look right.

no hassles with machining a new one, but i guess i could try drill and tap old one.

i would think its well old and gave up with the constant tension from the springs.

Plenty of meat left on the OEM part. I'd drill and tap it and use a high strength thread as suggested above. Either loctite it or pin it. Job jobbed...

Why complicate things?

If it fails again you can always then make a new one!

Ps. If you don't have access to hex bar there are some useful things called stud connectors, which are basically a long nut ( typically about 3 nuts long) usually used for joining lengths of studding together which can be very useful.

You have detention after class he already stated in 1st post he had hex bar and I mentioned stud connectors in second post
