Best way to join 1cm diameter 1cm length mild steel tube to small piece of sheet steel

Hi,

I'm a complete beginner. I'd rather learn from the experts than make my own mistakes.

I need to join a 1cm diameter 1cm length of mild steel tube to a strip of steel plate, 1.5cm x 10cm. I have a MIG welder. Is it possible to weld it, or should I use some kind of soldering technique?

You could weld it but you would have a bead where you welded. It might be better to braze it. Difficult to say without knowing what it's for or how you want it finished.

I'm sculpting an arm out of strips of steel. It's supposed to rough. My clamps haven't arrived yet, so I can't experiment until they do. I'll give it a go with the welder and post back on here, when I've tried it.

I don't know how small the pieces of steel can be, to use a MIG welder.

If its tube and you're not bothered about the strength of the weld you could just tack it around the inside assuming the torch will fit in....wont have a giant weld bead on the outside then

Drill a hole in the plate and plug weld from behind?

I wouldn't actually use a clamp for that just push the tube down onto the sheet and Bob three tacks on equidistant
Hammer shaft will do just fine if you don't do it by hand
