Best way to fix heavy paint chip?

2006 mondeo, so will be 2 pack of some sort I assume.

Top edge of windscreen, the roof has a nasty little blistering chip about size of a 10p maximum, can't leave it because it's getting worse.

My spraying was in the days of celly and Valflash so not sure which way to go, will it 'patch' or will it need the whole panel flashed in.

Probably looking at getting it done rather than doing it myself, so just wanting a heads up of what they will suggest.

Its a sort of grey bluey metallic, I suppose not easy to match for patching.

iwould be looking for rust under the blisters.if there then it's another job.

If the blister has been caused by a stone chip down to the metal the blister will be holding moisture allowing the rust to spread under the paint both in a larger area and through the thickness of the metal.

Most of the chips repair companies are quite good at repairing such as these, however many won't attempt it where spreading rust is involved.

Most give free quotes.

You could carefully scrape away the loose paint film with such as a craft knife blade, carefully remove as much rust as possible with wet and dry then treat the area with one of the little brush on rust compounds / paints.

It won't look too pretty but will let you see the extent of the rust and prevent it getting worse.

Yes without a doubt rust is there, it will need took back, some rust convertor, stopper and sprayed, I can manage all that except the spraying and fairly sure aerosol would result in an obvious patch repair.

2006 Mondeo will probably be water based paint. Take it back to bare metal and rust stop it then stopper or filler it to the old paint level and feather it in. If you get a good paint match you should be able to disguise it pretty well but you don't say if it's a solid colour or a metallic and lacquer. It might pay to get a chips away man to sort it if the car is worth it. It's probably had a new screen and the fitter marked it leaving it vulnerable, it does happen.

I did mention it was metallic, hence the more difficult to match probem, think I will get an aerosol and try a bit under the bonnet or somewhere.

If it was not going to travel further I would leave it but can see it's already starting, our nearest chip away appears to be about 50 miles away...the hazards of living in Cumbria.

Yes it is base and lacquer, at times like this I miss the day's of celly, would have been a lovely little afternoon DIY job and a perfect finish/match for less than a tenner

there is nothing more to repaing with celly or 2k repair the area flat the full roof blend in the base coat and laquer the full roof job done

you could do a spot repair but you would see the edge of the new laquer when looked at, at certain angles

You make it sound easy

The main criteria is to stop it spreading, It is so small and at an edge so I am going to try a patch repair first, if thats a major disaster the gun will get fired up..if it's sort of ok but slightly noticeable I will ensure there is a blob of seagull s*** in the right spot when considering part exing.

when you flat out the rust spot make sure you use a block and ideally you will need to go bigger then the rust spot in order to feather out the edges enough so as not to see a dip in the paint work
