Best paint for old stripped window sash pre glazing

I'd planned to paint this sash with an oil based primer and gloss before getting it glazed using conventional putty.

Any reason not to go that way?

All the pro wood working shops I’ve ever been to seem to use Sikkens or Morrell products

Looks very nice finish but never used myself

Zinsser seems to be a company specialising in primers, offering alternatives for various requirements.

I've always preserved them with the blue weathershield. Puttied the glass In and left them in situ to dry before the decs come in. Glazing with putty is easy mate.

primed then glazed just like when you by them from brand new or used to get them primed ,my hardwood windows and beads i had made 45 years ago were all primed with micro porous primer before fitting. maybe no one can be bothered nowadays or hasnt been taught any better . more than likely no one wants to put the time in as they wont get paid any more for it and it will hold the job up

Umm. I'm talking 100-300 year old windows.

The reason they come primed is it's easier than masking them up I'd assume. And cheaper.

I try and avoid working on newer windows. 9 times out of ten the timbers crap.

that is very true when new they wernt seasoned properly so you were stuffed from the start. all that happened was you painted the moisture in and they rotted out 1970 sprayed with pink primer

80s and 90s weren't much better. Wood ends up pulling apart like straw. Fast grown pos

Both are A game of finish suppliers in the wood world.

Ive noticed over the years all the old sash windows in bays etc are bare wood on the insides (brick facing) i think this is why they have survived so long as the timber can still breath but yet be out the weather.

Yup. The sashes on older windows are not painted on the sides or bottom usually either.
