Best material for a whirligig base sleeve.

The new base I have has 3 concentric sleeves that are not a good fit resulting in the whirligig wobbling about.

I plan to make a now solid sleeve. Any suggestions for the best material to use, nylon, delrin etc?

Galvanised steel tube such as a couple of feet of scaffolding pole has worked for me in the past.
Rather depends on the diameter of the whirligig's pole.

Do you have a lathe ?
Personally, I would make that out of HDPE, as ;

A/: It's less prone to swelling when wet.

B/: I have some.

600mm of alloy bar and turn the diameters to fit, just had the same problem, massive bending motion when full of wet clothes and blowing.

Plastic water pipe, slit along it's length so it slides over the support pole, making it a nice fit into a the steel tube I concreted into the ground. Smear of grease on pole, on outside of sleeve, and it all comes out when needed.

Take the sleeves out, dry them, and put Sikaflex EBT+ between them. That should take some of the play out.

Job for tomorrow, I'll need to get the steady rest out for the first time.

Would break my heart having to make it from that. Plastic water pipe for me too, I assume the metal part is already in as you can also get those in different diameters too.

I used pvc and didn't need the steady rest in the end.

A bit of cleanup now necessary.

Perfect fit.

And a debris cap to top it off.
