Best grinding tool recommendations please

Having now started practicing my welds, I am keen to also follow up with grinding down. I have a 4" electric dewalt angle grinder but wonder if there are better tools that I should invest in please for grinding MIG welds down on 0.8mm / 1mm sheet joins? Is it worth going air? Purely DIY for a car restoration.

Nothing beats a good grinder.

Thick grinding disks work well.

i prefer the 4,1/2" grinder with 5" discs but most of the time i have to cut and expand the grinders shield for them

i wish they would also supply the bigger grinder shield

getting the right grinder discs is the most important

i have 2 grinders one is set up for a flap disc use while the other is used with a proper grinding disc

got rid of all my air grinders / polishers....the compressor cost to much to run on long jobs

Stick with electric grinder and get a 3m fibre disk backing pad and some ceramic fibre discs. Faster, flatter, easier. I think the smallest is 4.5" though.

i would never use air grinders they use 2 much air. i use die grinders and a da orbital sander , there brill and economical on air

I also use a die grinder to remove the bulk of the weld, then a flap disc if I need to smooth it further. I also sometimes use a cutting disc side-on, keep it moving and it'll bring the weld down quite quickly but you have to be careful that it doesn't dig in.

And don't forget a 10mm finger sander/grinder for those places where a disc won't go

Cordless die grinder, has had a lot of use the last few weeks. Great not having to get the cable extension out like I did for the previous mains die grinder - where I'd often make do with a hand file to avoid the cable.

The consumables are what makes the difference IMHO.
At work we have Flexovit disks, which are just so-so.
I had to remove a lot of weld today and the Flexovit disk just was not cutting it, it skated over the to op the weld/remnant of pipe on the base plate.
I took a 3m Cubitron disk out of my car, and with the same grinder the weld/pipe was gone in a few strokes.
