Berlan BPS40 Plasma Cutter Wont Work?

I bought this item just after Xmas and collected it, When I got there he told me that he had run out of consumables and that this was the only thing it needed, taking him on his word I paid for the cutter and ordered the consumables when I got home, they arrived a week ago and today is the only chance I have had to try it. It switches on, when you press the button the air flows fine, I have a good earth, put when I make contact with the metal I get nothing?

Does anyone have a clue if this sounds to be a knackered set or maybe something I am missing.

The only upside is, is that I know where he lives and am prepaired to take it back for a refund.

Any help would be most appreciated?

Would it possibly be that my compressor being only the cheapest machinemart one at 24L is simply not up to the job?

It does hold 4 Bar for about 30 secs before the compressor kicks back in

i know very little about plasmas mate, but it should still cut (if only for a very short time) with a low capacity compressor. when you make contact with the metal, do you get a spark? i think some cutters you have to press the tip onto the workpiece, then lift off? as i said i know very little about these things!

I'd suspect an electrical fault rather than insufficient air, even a small compressor will supply enough air to get the cutter to start. So you get absolutely nothing other than air when you press the trigger?
Double check the earth lead connection into the machine, it could be as simple as that.
It does also sound a bit like the seller knew it had a fault, I'd see about getting a refund if you can't get it working. If you can't get a refund then someone on here would possibly be able to diagnose a pcb fault and repair it for you or you could get a replacement board direct from China.

Take it back to him, with the consumables and get him to show you how to use it. If it only needs the new consumables, and if he's true to his word he should get it up and running again.
Then again, your handy to get a refund if he can't get it working with the new parts as he suggested.

Not used the make which you have, but from experience, plasmas usually have a few safety features or cut-outs that wont let them start cutting without tips fitted correctly, air pressure correct etc. I would double check over everything before taking it make to your new friend

Cheers for the replies, I can't see this guy giving me my money back, however I do know where he lives so its not an impossibility to go back if need be with a few friends

I really just need it to work, so if anyone can assist me in making it work, whichever it needs to do this either a new PCB or just a look over I would very much appreciate it, I am in Huddersfield but can post it out or take it locally if there is anyone who is able to take a peak?

Yes I only get Air coming through, my gauge shows 4 Bar and all my consumables are new, I even tried fitting all new bits in case the ones I fitted may have been dodgy but still no luck

Hi,

you may have too much air coming out and it kills the arc before it starts.

Do you hear a ticking sound about twice a second (it's the HF start).

When mine went the same way I found it was a transistor on the board that feeds to output. It's difficult to explain and TBH I can't remember all of the details, but there's a thread on here about it somewhere from about a year ago.

I drew out some circuit diagrams and posted a few pictures. If you have a meter and can test transistors then give it a go. I have some spare trannies here if you need one, no cost.
