Bending 1 1/2" Blue Band Tube

Hi all,

I'm in need of a new roll cage so rather than pay to have one made again I've taken the leap and have gotten a Ridgid 8120 bender, have never used one before so for once I've glanced at the instructions and it says to grease the pipe before bending.

Just wondering if this is necessary chaps?

grease will help to get the pipe out of the former once bent , specially as its all new !

my formers are aluminium and when bending more than 45 degrees they bind on the pipe have to whack the former off with a hammer

Broadening this subject ever so slightly

Can anybody give me a quick tutorial on bending please?

Scenario, imagine I need to form a L shape, each side is 1 meter in length from the end of the tube to the outside of the 90 bend, how much additional length do I have to allow for the radius of the bend?

Does the same radius allowance apply to a 45 degree bend etc or is it proportional to the angle?

Any help will be greatfuly appreciated,

There's a little free program I've used called Bendit which works out where to start your bends and clever stuff like that. It's here. I've not used it on anything as big as 1.5" but it's worked for me on 19mm tube.

biggest problem I have when bending 1.5inch pipe is that it collapses and you end up with a kinked pipe

found the only solution was to use blue band pipe and situation much improves, brown band pipe was a disaster in the bender
