Bench grinders and Stainless steel.

I was on another forum and one of the guys on there posted that he had bought an Aldi bench grinder and was very happy with it (easily pleased I suppose), but in his post he wrote that he was using it to grind some stainless steel. Another person replied that he shouldn't be using a normal grit wheel to grind stainless as it could cause the wheel to shatter. I can't see how this would occour, but given the spread of knowledge on here someone is more than likely to have a definitive answer, I await your comments folks.

I don't think it will make the wheel shatter, Dad, a retired engineer always told me that grinders were only for hard materials. Grinding anything soft would leave bits embedded into the stone that could come out when used with something hard, I'm not one to argue with him

Some one will be along to correct me if I'm wrong

It'll cause contamination and rust staining of the SS but I'm not aware of any mechanism where SS will attack the wheel.

The guys talking rubbish but I think he has confused himself with ali clogging and grabbing during cutting with grinders

Hello all,

I was taught soft wheel for hard material and a hard wheel for soft material. The wheels normally fitted are a medium grade and will clog as said with soft metals.

One place I worked, we had to fit a keyswitch to the grinder to stop the silly beggars grinding anything, they tried ally, copper, even wood on it!

The reason that softer (grit bonding agent) is used for grinding harder materials is that as the stone sheds its outer layers it ia constantly exposing new sharp grit to the cutting surface.
