bench grinder vibrating

Hi all, my 8" bench grinder has started vibrating when it is getting up to speed and when it's slowing down.

At full speed it's fine.

I can't feel any play in the shaft anywhere - anyone got any ideas?

It's probably the most used tool in the garage so I'd like to fix it rather than let it shake itself to bits

sounds like the wheel needs dressing

What's it fixed to? It helps to fix it to securely to a heavy bench.

thats a great idea that bs...and after ive just bought another dressing tool too

or it could be that the wheel is now out of balance, not sure how to rebalance a bench grinding wheel, but they used to do it for surface grinders in the tool room of a company I worked at many years ago.

Precision grinding should be treated separately as its close tolerance work. My bet is a rub with a dressing tool on a bench grinder will sort it and they cost about a tenner but a crack is worth looking for as a breaking wheel put a college in hospital for a stay years back breaking a few ribs and such, after that the bearings.

Loosen one wheel turn it 90 degrees on the shaft and re tighten and test, repeat until improvement is seen. You don't get any cheaper than that....
