Bench grinder to buffer conversion

I had an old bench grinder lying about and was not keen on the price of a buffer, so bought a cheap conversion kit:

Strip off the wheels and guards - tapered wheel attachments would not fit, so gave them a tickle on the lathe:

Kit came with a selection of polishes:

And buffing wheel fitted:

tried it on on a Matchless casting that had some heavy corrosion :

worked quite well for a quick first attempt:

rub the casing up with wet and dry abrasive course down to fine. get all the pits and scratches out then start on the course buffing paste and then to fine

Was being lazy and just wanted to see what the buffer would do, will put the time in for parts I will be using on my engine rebuild.

I have one of the bolt on stubs. Had to drill and tap two extra thread for additional grub screws to get it to run straight as not a tight fit. The threaded type of adapter stub shown in the pics seems a far better choice.

Yeah i hate polishing ally, or stainless, the black grime gets imbedded in your skin and no amount of scrubbing seems to shift it. As has been said, the soap and fluff and metal particles get into your eyes and lungs.

Seen a guy using Scotch brite wheels & they seem to do a good job!

I use the pads you can fit onto variable speed grinders or polishing tools

I got feed up with the lack of power with the grinder to buffer convession......always waiting for the motor to pick up speed........


so built this out of what was laying around.......

has to be on wheels as not enough romm at the mo.......next place it'll be bolted down........luckily no vibes........so it stays put....
3 phase, 3hp contin rated motor......yes have now made the belt cover, so whilst it's out I'll fit it.......
most expensive parts were the taper lock pulley's.......
ps...the flapwheels are not drunk it's the camera angle/lens.........

Impressive, I imagine that will be quicker than my 6" flap wheels with 1/2 hp

I use my record bench grinder, but i am not going to use it anymore as its abuse really. It gets hot and i am sure it does the bearings no good. I might buy a 2 or 3 hp motor and build one like Franks.

and put dust extraction on it, I have a cowl around the wheel that I plug my old vacuum into the back, old clothes and dust mask.

I too hate black snot!
