bench grinder stones - recommendation please

hi all,

looking for some recommendations please for GOOD grinding wheels. i got a SIP 8 inch Bench grinder recently, very happy with the unit, quiet well balanced and tons of power for my needs. The one issue however is the supplied stones are absolute rubbish. i remove more stone dust than material, even on mild steel. im covered in grit after grinding a a bit of 5mm mild steel plate, wheels just disintegrate.

Can i get some recommendations for some fit for purpose wheels that will remove metal and not stone!

Bought quite a bit off midland abrasives over the years, decent supplier but probably not the cheapest.

You need to decide what you’ll be grinding because there are different grades (normally distinguished by colour) for different materials.

well, im going to have to compromise somewhere because I grind everything ,and i cant have one wheel for every material realistically. So a good quality 'general' stones would be ideal, course 36, and say 120 or so.

if i did a scale from most common to least, it would be at a guess:

mild steel - 65%
stainless usually 304 - 25%
cast iron/Ti - 5%
alu - 5%

Well I suggest you get more than one. And for your own safety, please don’t grind aluminium on the same wheels you grind steel on, you need a very open grain for aluminium otherwise it can clog up the wheel and cause it to explode once it heats up!

Sounds like your problem is you have sillicon carbide wheels fitted? These are for grinding carbide and hard materials, which means they have a soft binder, and are very dusty. They will work on soft materials but make a large mess, as you found out.

Alumina wheels will grind all the materials you listed above, and tungsten electrodes if you use tig.. they generally have a hard binder and last a reasonably long time.

If you do need to grind carbide or similar then I'd suggest a resin bonded diamond wheel for that. Chinese ones are relatively cheap and perfectly adequate, I have several.

Been wondering this myself, my grinding wheels at home disappear vs the ones in work all I really use it for is tungsten, think it's 80 grit

thanks for the info - ive no idea what they are, theres no specs/sticker on them. they were supplied with the grinder. il take some photos shortly

In his original post, he states the 'supplied wheels', which, to me, says the ones that come with the grinder when bought from SIP.

I wonder how likely it is that they would supply silicon carbide wheels as OEM fitment.

SiC wheels are common enough that it wouldnt suprise me. Some people think they are needed for tungstens so maybe why.
Not many people bench grind tungsten carbide cutting tools so that purpose is unlikely.

The old grinder I got off here, came with SiC wheels. Reminds me I need to sort that out - I had problems dressing the alumina replacements to run true and put the SiC wheels back.

How often do you dress the wheels? Needs to be done regularly if you want to avoid a glazed wheel IMO.

Grey wheels for most steels and cast iron,
Green wheels for roughing tungsten carbide then diamond wheels to finish.
White wheels are usually only used on grinding machines, surface grinding.
