Been offered more than asked for item!

Don't you just love it when someone offers to pay more than the asking price on Gumtree. I have an item listed on Gumtree at AU$55 and about $11 for postage. Get a text saying he's happy to pay $80 if I post it and he will pay by Paypal or Bank deposit.....Hmmm. Better get my ear muffs out as the alarm bells are starting to ring.

But being the nice and trusting guy that I am, I send him a text saying it will be less than $80 just need his post code to check postage costs and ask for his telephone number and also if someone will be there to receive it

Get a return text saying happy to pay the $80, giving me a number and just the suburb in Victoria, no other info. So I call the number twice and no answer, fair enough it was a Friday night after all.

Called this morning and funnily enough the number is "incorrect or incomplete". Shock ...Horror, now there is a surprise. So I send a text to him this morning telling him he must have typed in a wrong number and to provide one that works, but so far no answer, I doubt that he will reply.

Bit of a shame really as I would have liked to string him along for quite a while, last scammer that I had, tried to "buy" a large boat fuel tank with some fuel in it off me sight unseen "for her son" and to send it initially via the "Post", also wanted to pay more using Western Union or something like that. Really!! and I thought that I had removed that "S" sticker from my forehead.

I think I strung him/her along for close to a month, traced their details to England and forwarded the details to some law enforcement dept. over there to follow up.

Will wait and see what happens next.

Really don't expect any useless authority in the Uk to care, who ever they are. They wont! Even more so as no crime has been committed. All you had was lip service and that's all you will get in this country. There is hardly enough police to deal with proper crimes in this country let alone stuff no one cares about.

Scott0031, I didn't expect any result from them but at least I tried to do my bit and provided that dept with the info should they ever decide to do something about it. I didn't lose any money over the fuel tank as there was no transaction and it was blatantly obvious to anyone with half a brain that it was a scam, but at least I had some fun aggravating the scammers and keeping them busy, less time for scamming other people.

With this one I will see what pans out as I do need a laugh, the weather here has been miserable so can't do any work or even go fishing, so have a lot of time on my hands at the moment!

It's a bit of a strange one unless they hoped to do a paypal payment and claim for non delivery.

I once had a strange ebay sale, it also set alarm bells ringing loud and clear but they paid so I sent the item fully tracked and insured.

Five days later another £10 appeared in my paypal account with the message of 'delighted with item, many thanks, please accept this token of appreciation'.

Wish they were all like that

I won a job lot of lathe/mill tooling on Ebay for the starting bid of £1 . I paid for it immediately with paypal but it was collection only (probably the reason for no other bids) but when I got there I gave the guy another £100 in cash for which he was extremely grateful . I would have felt like a thief walking out of there with in excess of £300 worth of tooling for £1.

I got a Bullfinch torch on a 19k propane cylinder for 99p and gave the woman £10 when we got there. I once had a payment appear in my paypal a few days after the item had already been paid for and had to do a refund, the bloke was just confused. Some people should be supervised at all times.

Many years ago my precious bicycle was stolen from right under my nose (I literally turned my back to pick up a cat basket). It was one of the few items I bought brand new, a Kona Hahana and I kept it fully maintained, had it set up just nice etc. Broke my heart that did.

Then years later on Gumtree "****tyshitty bicycle" was advertised for sale with a picture of a Kona Hanhanna Race light for a tenner. It was in a right state but I wanted it! Went to collect it and once the deal was done got chatting with the chap as you do and he offered me tickets to go see him on stage where he was doing a "stand up".

Ok cool I said, I've been looking for a Kona for ages.

"Oh, I didn't know it was a name" he says, "Is it worth a lot then?"

"Well worth a tenner for a Kona Race Light, yes".

"Maybe you should give me more for it then" He suggests.

"Wow. You really are a comedian"...

When we owned a holiday cottage rental a scam was to send a fake cheque for too much and then be contacted asking for a refund before the fake cheque was found out. Loads of scammers about.
