If the photo shows it as I think it is....I would make an accurate note of its length, then get an extension welded on, drill out the plastic bush, slide the new bit in with araldite and even consider drilling through the bush and metal and inserting a small pin for extra security.
Not quite going to go quite that route, but you gave me a good idea for a bodge
Seeing as I've got plenty of 1.6mm Stainless filler rod ends, I drilled down the length of the bush, tacked a filler rod to extend the metal stick, pushed it all the way through the bush and bent it over where it came out the other end. Seems to have worked.(At least for now)
