Don't need to start from an edge, most likely limitation when working along the diagonal of a sheet is the throat depth of the machine and in the case of a piece of work that has folds as well as beads need to give the order of work a bit of thought- folds can interfere with bead rolling and visa versa for example
Just lay the beads out with a marker pen (only really need start/stops when working parallel to the edge of the sheet with a fence as in this example), in the case of an X you'll have one unbroken bead and two shorter ones. Set the pressure with a piece of scrap (note # of turns on die pressure adjustment) before playing with the real job as you have one shot. With a manual machine it's usually a 2 person job really, one to crank the handle and one to steer the work
