50 mA into a short circuit (once upon a time I'd stick a Tester SA9083 across the line to look for high-resistance joints*), but a lot of exchanges are now running telephones over the digital broadband signal - just had a new SmartHub delivered, no mention of how you use it in an emergency with the mains off... I shall be buying a cheap UPS off EvilBay and changing its batteries!More like milliamps from the landline supply!

* Or worse, Gefeller line muxes, box with 8 lines coming in, up to 32 out - but not at the same time, and no good for DSL, have to take the phoone off the hook to get on the internet! Easy to spot, the 50 mA pulsed on every couple of seconds :/
