More like milliamps from the landline supply!

50 mA into a short circuit (once upon a time I'd stick a Tester SA9083 across the line to look for high-resistance joints*), but a lot of exchanges are now running telephones over the digital broadband signal - just had a new SmartHub delivered, no mention of how you use it in an emergency with the mains off... I shall be buying a cheap UPS off EvilBay and changing its batteries!

* Or worse, Gefeller line muxes, box with 8 lines coming in, up to 32 out - but not at the same time, and no good for DSL, have to take the phoone off the hook to get on the internet! Easy to spot, the 50 mA pulsed on every couple of seconds :/

we supply a battery backup for the hub and ONT on request.

Exchanges have UPS and generator backup typically. Whether they work or not is questionable!


Even the street DSLAM (the stuff for the fttc rollout) have battery backup I'm fairly sure.

Masts also have battery backup. I forget how long it has to last but I think EE were required to meet something when they took on the emergency services network.

One of a mates jobs is changing the back up batteries once they get to a certain age and makes a few bob on the side selling the old ones which are perfectly good.
