Battery life question

Seems to be an on going problem here with anything that has a battery fitted, even if they are unused the vast majority seem to end up leaking. At best they destroy the carrier but in some cases the kit, what is the dormant life expectancy of these batteries and are there better makes that dont do this?

These below are about a year old Any suggestions or fixes would be appreciated.

Most alkaline batteries have an end date on them somewhere, generally on either end.

Decent batteries might help last longer.

Keeping the equipment and batteries dry helps a lot, any dampness speeds up the corrosion and leaking.
I only use Duracell Professional batteries now and I have no issues with them leaking.

the last lot of Duracell batteries i took out of a fluke temp meter had corroded, there isn't any batteries i know of that wont leak eventually (that was stored at 20 degrees 40% humidity in lab!) so i suppose keeping an eye on the use by date would be important.
we chucked out some 9v ones recently that had gone out of date from being sat in the stores for goodness knows how long, i did test a couple and they had discharged somewhat.
Duracell do an orange industrial version which we have switched to but cant say for now if they're any better??

We use Duracell rechargeable batteries in all our stuff. Initial purchase is quite expensive but never had any issues with them. If my battery operated stuff isn’t getting used for a while i remove the batteries.

IIRC when the alkaline batteries first came out donkey's years ago Duracell (I think) guaranteed them as leak proof and would replace any item that was damaged by them leaking. Not seen that guarantee for many years

Replace any AAs with Eneloops, you can also get C to AA and D to AA adaptors so you can stick them in those too. Better performance and 100% leak free from my experience, higher initial outlay but savings after a few cycles.

There are times when only 1.5V will do, not the 1.2V of rechargeables.

I have a fair stock of AAA varta batteries and they seem to still have another eight years of shelf life but I know full well they will spew their guts out before then. I never knew there was such a thing as a leak proof battery but energizer seem to be making bold claims http://www.energizer.com/about-batteries/no-leaks-guarantee

There are times when only 1.5V will do, not the 1.2V of rechargeables.

Of course there may be the very odd exception.

In the case of an Eneloop vs a Alki that open circuit voltage is irrelevant. The Eneloop will be 1.4v fully charged anyway.

The lower impedance Eneloop will maintain a higher voltage as soon as a decent load is applied.

I bought a load (well 12xAA) that were to be installed in an inacessable area about a year ago. They were Energizer ones and they have the leak free guarantee on them.

I did have a 3xD cell maglight that I kept in the truck (so bouncing around) years ago. The cells leaked in that and Energizer sent me enough Halfords vouchers to replace it so they do backup the warranty on them!
