if I go to a building suppliers looking for a SDS bit,if any size is likely to be sold out,its 5.5mm
most sets i come across have a 5.5 bit,but it would be the only 1/2 measure bit in the set.its generally a standard spec drill bit here.cheaper sets, aldi/lidl and the likes never seem to contain them.but it could be a european thing.construction habits change from place to place.
its not a matter of drilling a masonary hole to a tolerance of 0.5mm,just that it works best for the most common plug and screw pairing for light fixings in my line of work(electrical).8 gauge screws and red plugs,Rawl* are the brand i use
plumbers generally mount sinks,rads etc with brown plugs(7mm bit) and 12 gauge screws

I think you mean that set does not include a 5,5mm drill,it contains alot more than two drill bits.

What make of plugs do you use?
I must say,having never drilled a hole in a wall to within 0,5mm,I now feel rather inept.

using 6mm plugs in brick and hard block and drilling with a 5.5 drill is a pain in the ar ,,.,.e u have to tap the plugs in with a hammer and the screws are as tight as hell not much fun when u use 100 a day so 0.5 makes a big diffrence

We've got it easy today, I've got a couple of the original Rawlplug tools you had to hammer in and twist to form the hole, then push in a piece of fibrous stick and cut to length

Remember those days too,the plug used to resemble a liquorice root stick, and the old 3 fluted inching bit, bloody hard work, we are soooooo spoiled these days, thanks for all your input fellas.....

the good old days star drills and a rawltool and fibre plugs

The old chap next door, he's around 84 and us young 60 year olds know nothing, he was putting some trellis up on the garden wall using a rawltool and I lent him my rechargeable hammer drill with masonry bit. He looked at it like it was black magic but as soon as he started he was like a dog with two tails and finished the job in minutes.
