Batten Mounting

Ok, I need to mount a wide wooden batten approx 6 x 2" to my garage wall, the reason bei.the blocks used in my garage are so hard its a nightmare to drill into to mount new electrical connections for welders and power tools, my question would things like concrete bolts / anchors work for this, and are they self drilling.

Get some good SDS+ bits and drill, you will have no problem. Concrete bolts need a hole drilling slightly smaller than the bolt thread to take them.

concrete bolts are not self drilling, you need to drill a pilot hole first.

What are you using to drill the blocks as they are not normally that hard?

depends on the aggregate they are made with some can be a right pain to drill

hammer fixings - jet bolts are a bit OTT ( hammer fixings or frame fixings are like big rawplugs with a cross between a nail and a screw in it, drill through the batten and the wall push the fixing in and hammer the last bit they have the advantage that they dont need a big hole drilling)

Hammer/frame fixings you leave some shank showing to knock in till the plug part is level with the surface then screw the last bit in to grip. Concrete screws have superceded them in a lot of places, I used some last week to fit new window frames in the bathroom and bedroom.

While I do realize that what I had suggested to fix my batten was OTT the block work in this garage is like nothing I have ever come across before, the colour of the blocks are dark grey if that means anything and are so hard my Bosch hammer drill will not look at them, am not sure these self drilling concrete screws are man enough...it looks like a Hilti drill and hammer fixings are the most probable answer.

Standard drills (percussion) are pretty useless for drilling masonry. The RPM is too high causing the tip to over heat.

You need a SDS type drill, they have a pneumatic action, and will make light work of all masonry, but the hardest Engineering bricks. Good quality drill bits such as Armeg's are also worth the extra, in very hard to drill applications

The concrete screws are not self drilling, you need a hole 0.5 mm less than the screw to screw them in with a Torx bit. Your hammer drill is probably not up to the job, go to the hire shop and hire a drill with SDS+ and some bits and you will be amazed at the difference. A friend of mine was installing a handrail and drilling into stonework and his Bosch hammer drill almost melted his bit after 20 minutes. I lent him my Bosch SDS and some bits and he finished the job in minutes without even getting the drill warm.

Pink grip it to the wall? I have a hilti gun for fixing stuff to stubborn brick work and have fixed Battons to the wall for cable runs in the past. I got my hilti for £40 second hand of eBay so might be worth a look as there easy to use and very little to go wrong with them

£12 a day + refundable deposit at the local hire shop, where can you get one for that 'cos I'll have 10.

True, I guess it depends on where the nearest hire shop is. Got to factor petrol in these days.

Don't bother with the battons, just buy a half decent SDS drill so every time you need to fix to the wall you'll do it quickly, easily and much more securely than screwing into wood. Much cheaper in the long run to have the right tool for the job!

Just won a s/h Hilti with sds chuck on evilbay, I know it's a piece of p*** job to do but don't really get involved any more due to health issues, this all started trying to fit a power rail and a couple of commando sockets, damn near done for me, spent the rest of the day in bed....should know better by now, but old habits and all that. Anyway it should make make anything like this a lot easier now..... thanks for all your input fellas.

This is a good starter kit if they've got any left.Gives you a chance to see what sizes you're going to use.
Always handy to have the larger ones,just in case.

If they have the sds+ sets in Aldi or Lidl get one of them as well, dirt cheap and the long bit is extremely useful for plumbing through double brick walls.

that set linked only has 5mm and 6mm bits.
dont know about ye,but the best light duty plugs i use are always 5.5mm bore


edit:looks like screwfix dont supply them.maybe theyre just more common here

red plugs are ok for 6.mm drill or a tight fit in to a 5.5mm drill

I think you mean that set does not include a 5,5mm drill,it contains alot more than two drill bits.

What make of plugs do you use?
I must say,having never drilled a hole in a wall to within 0,5mm,I now feel rather inept.
