Going to be making some gates up for ourselves and a few other folk.
Going to be various sizes but all about a walkway wide.
Going to be using 1 inch wide material for the gates.
The center panels are going to be of various designs with some swirly bits and some roundy bits. i have built up the tooling needed for swirly bits and round bits. Details of homemade ring roller to follow once it has progressed to about mk2.3
I have a well equipped workshop with a nice welder, bandsaw, grinders, belt sander, big scarey dog, kettle, beer fridge, lath, milling machine, etc. i'm quite happy with the whole welding and cutting stuff and have been making stuff to do things like frames, benchs etc for years. This is my first stab at "pretty" apart from the odd fart about with coat hooks etc.
Now my questions are
1 Should i build a nice stable outer frame out of 1" hollow box section or should i leave the center panel hold it up?
1B if i am to build a frame should it be the entire outside of the gate like a nice big box or would a U with the two sides and bottom do.
1C Any precautions to be taken while welding stuff up to stop the whole gate warping?
2 What is best for hinging. I was considering using some rose joints for added adjustableness or just buy the commercial pin type hinges.
3 What is the best way to mount the gates if no big sod off fence posts already exist as at least one gate i am due to replace is mounted to wibbly wobbly piece of rotten wood.
4 Any preferred method of having a gate catch?
5 if i send it off to the glavanisers are they happy if i leave the ends of any box section open where possible and if not posible where and how big a hole should i be boring to stop then attaching it with random holes.
6 if making wider gates like about a car width or half car width any differences in basic frame design.
Thank you muchly
