Basic night latch Yale lock

In a few days I'll be making a timber gate for my next door neighbour. I've looked at a lot of different locks, latches etc., many of which are more expensive than I'm prepared to pay, given that I'll be doing the job for the cost of materials only and the neighbour only has a small budget. What looked a possibility is a basic Yale lock which retails for around £10. What are your thoughts on how well it will fare outside? And what would you do to protect it from the environment as much as possible?

Yale latch type locks don't weather well outdoors, although it might fare a little better if some sort of rain protection is provided. Some of the digital locks are better suited, but a bit spendy. A galvanised bolt and a padlock would be the cheapest option.
