Base onto etch?

Is it acceptable to apply your base or solid straight on top of acid etch? Eg, if I have etched up a bare aluminium part and I'm happy with the finish is there a need for a high build 2K primer before the base coat?
This is coming from someone who has a loose understanding of paint systems, I can put paint on to a reasonable finish but find all the products and terminology frustrating.

Depends on the etch applied. Some 1k etch such as u-pol acid 8 can be painted right over.

should be fine yes , we used to do just that at the bodyshop when i started on clean straight new panels

You can do it but it does soak in the final finish when fully cured

How do you mean Drew?, You would be able to see the etch through your base coat ?

it means the full gloss will/may die back a little as it soaks into the etch

shouldnt really be an issue , nothing a quick polish wont make right

not sure if this applies to you but don't put seam sealer straight onto acid etch or the other way round some manufacturers state acid residue left behind can cause the sealant to fail
