Bartering/recycling

I don't know about many other members on here, but I can't pass a skip without having a peer inside it and, if there's anything that looks useful in it I have to drag it clear and either re-use it or store it for future use.
Quite apart from the financial savings it's the waste of the energy that had to go into making the material in the first place that makes my blood boil!
So, I have a certain amount of useful material in storage in my shed, but sometimes see other 'useful material' being slung which I can't make use of but know someone else could. Is there a section of the forum where I could post anything I find to see if either anyone can use it or if I want some material can see if there is any chance of a barter?
If this seems like a stupid idea please tell me and I'll forget it, I just BLOODY HATE WASTING GOOD MATERIALS!!

If it's 'workshop related', i.e tools, materials, equipment etc. then stick it in the for sale section, if it's not then there's freecycle.

I'll do that Wozzaaah, must re-try my Freecycle accounts 'cos last time I tried to log on I had all sorts of aggro.
I was more thinking that if there were like-minded bods on here who were near me they could make good use of things that I find (yes, I am a child of 'The Wombles' generation!)

Have you got to the point Roofman where you stand there declaiming to anyone who will listen, whilst piclking bits out of the skip "have you seen this? I can't believe they've thrown this out!!"

I think we are all skip rats at heart but it's worth remembering that although someone has thrown this treasure into the skip it is still technically someone's property and you should ask before taking it. Any rights to the (usually metal) items I "find" are probably technically the skip owner's once the original owner has transferred it and if he is expecting to make money from it's scrap value he may be a bit put out at me taking it (so I usually wait till no one is looking )

I have been making friends with a number of industrial places recently to get scrap for free / charity donation.

Quite a number of the places are more than happy for you to take stuff especially if they get charged for it's removal.

So far I have got access to the scrap from the local ferry workshops, a local electrical repair shop and a car service workshop.

Live in or near Douglas then? that's one of the "joys" of living on an island, costs money to move anything in or out. I used to enjoy coming over for the car rallies.

Im about 5 mins or so outside Douglas, but work in douglas so I can nip up and get stuff when required !!

Living on an island is weighing up the pros and cons all the time but the pros still outweigh the cons at the moment, if it changes then we may move !!!

Now that there are hardly any rallies there's only the TT for the tourism lark !!

obtaining "rooters" rights with enginering firms and there skips is like winning the pools..i have rooters benefits with a local scrapyard and obtain a lot of stock from him. Skips are the just bread and butter stuff on the way home All the above is just a hobby as i actually need to switch on my sensible head running my company from time to time

Last time I dipped into a skip the lorry driver turned up. I asked him if he minded me taking stuff and he said "take the ******* lot if you like."

My skip provider likes me to put any scrap in the bottom and cover it.

My local Freecycle has stopped us advertising stuff seen in skips because it belongs to the skip firm, and to take it would be theft.

Going down this morning for half a tonne of 4mm chequer plate in 5'x2'6" offcuts. Ideal for reflooring the farm lowloader.
