Barium meal (swallow)…....

As title, anyone else on here had one?

I had one on Wednesday as a follow-up procedure (already had the camera up the nose at first ENT Clinic appointment) part of an investigation into why food particles are getting stuck in my gullet when eating, to the extent that I have to clear the throat when swallowing, repeatedly during meals.

My (unusual for me) anxiety about the procedure wasn't assuaged by the duff info sent out with the appointment letter..... Anyhoo, the after effects have been much more unpleasant than the event. This included vomiting, stomach cramps and when I have a bowel movement the damned barium stuff refuses to flush....just sits there in the bottom of the pan 'leering' up at me. I now reckon I've got rid of most of it though.

So, if anyone is offered this, I'd be asking if there's ANY alternative available to achieve the required results.

All jest aside, the side effects can last for a few hours or a few days.

Drink lots of water, avoid rich food, send me your tools, rest and keep movements and stress as low as possible.

I had some for a hiatus hernia, sat in the chair and got x rayed ? and spotted it straight away, must have been 20 years back ? don't remember any side effects or flush issues ...
