Barbecue recommendations.

I am probably opening a can of worms here, and there will not be a definite answer but here goes...

My small garden seems to be in a wind tunnel - we are in a line of houses, have houses at different angles behind, etc and it is like being in a whirlwind sometimes. These times are always when I want to do a barbecue!
I had a traditional charcoal in a tray with grill over, the wind would make it roar away, smoke whirling around, making the old git neighbour cough and the ash would blow all over your food, etc.....
I bought a half decent gas one - the wind constantly blew the gas out, I sold that one....
I was given another charcoal one with guards, around it, vents, etc. Still the wind blows it like the first one, however many boards, etc I put around it, so that went in the skip last week....

So, what do I try next, do I spend lots of money on a Weber or similar, another gas one, or what do you recommend please.......

I was looking at Monoliths in a kitchen showroom last week, seriously nice bits of kit, I'd love to have one, but at £700 for the smallest one, up to £2500 for the big, dogs danglies, all singing all dancing version, I think I'll make do with half a Calor cylinder for now.

what fence do you have or is it just a low wall

oh and your quick to throw away when the fault could lie elsewhere

My opinion would be definitely not a gas one, I'm sure people will disagree with me but I think if you use a gas BBQ you may as well just cook indoors. The whole point of a BBQ is either an intense heat for searing, or a low heat with lots of smoke, both things gas doesn't really do.

I don't think a more expensive grill will help with wind, you probably need to come up with some sort of wind proof enclosure, maybe get a CO alarm and BBQ in the shed.

Your right, we need to, we sold this house 3 times and its fell through each time!! Now house prices have gone through the roof, I cant see it happening yet.

Fences are 6ft all round, I have put plywood sheets around it on 3 sides, about 6” away and about 18” higher than grill. No firepit or stove, etc.

I think you're right about the gas, not so sure about the shed

I’ll probably go and have a look at the Weber ones to see what they are like.

My gas BBQ went bang last year and replaced it with a 56cm Weber Kettle BBQ. I’ve since been messing about with slow cooking and indirect cooking with great success. I can honestly say the food is coming out with more flavour and juicy too. Cleaning up is easy too. Using a chimney I can get the charcoal lit and the BBQ up to full heat in just half hour.

You should be able to control the wind around the BBQ too as the air is drawn in through a variable vent at the bottom and another in the hood so you control how much air is going in.

You need to find a SS beer keg, then make your own

Would one of those rocket stoves work better in the wind. The ones with the self loading firewood Shute on the side they seem to be clean burn ash free from what I've read.

it now reads that you are suffering funnerling of the wind due to the buildings that are present in your location

part of the reason why i asked if they use a firepit or wood stove as it would also effect those as well

open fronted with closed sides types cant be used as they are effected by the winds as stated above

only method that you can use, i think is a lid over the barbeque type

a rocket stove or chimney type of stove will be effected but you can use a damper on the chimney type barbeque to slow the pull of the flue

Wind is funny stuff, funneling through your garden by putting up the high paneling you may have created an area that the wind can swirl over or round and cause extra vaccums, draughts and whirlwinds.
Diffraction or is it refraction can't remember now.

I BBQ in all weathers both gas and charcoal. It does get windy occasionally in the SW … I have had the gas blow out once or twice when doing very low / slow ribs etc but i monitor the ambient temp doing that so I get an alert pretty quick. I use a Weber kettle and that is fine in the wind - as people
Say above the vents are not really in the sides so it should be fine. Mine collects ash in a removable bucket - you’d have to be careful with the wind when emptying these. Cooking with the hood down is a little non intuitive but it really works. Only consideration would be when you open it up to turn or take food off if you get a gust you’ll end up with ash flavour … might take some luck. I’d suggest trying one of the kettles (the basic ones are not expensive) and if it doesn’t work someone on here will

i remember you asking if a rocket stove can be used with one of these the answer is yes it can

the issue with burning wood close to food is not my thing but in some cases it adds to the flavour, proper bread ovens and pizza ovens

the main issue is that clay pots can over heat it too quickly and it will crack the clay pot, both the wood fired inside of it and more so the rocket stove
like this one

however if you was to cut the bottom off of the clay pot and the base is brick built or fire brick makes no difference they will be less chance of cracking

lifting the lid part 1 concrete paver is to lift the high heat part of the rocket stove above the clay pot the heat is way too high at the top, now with the above system built as 2 you can now control the heat better between them and you have 2 uses from one rocket stove
