Bar coat

Hi,

Would you guys recommend using barcoat before spraying with waterbased base coat? The panels im going to be spraying have factory paint on, obviously prepped etc, its a 1991 car if that makes any difference.

Originally I was going to use celly, so needed it then, but not sure with waterbased.

Are they new panels? If so, there are two types of coating. One of them needs removing. I would suggest that rather than barcoat, you use a coat of epoxy primer. Then you can use whatever base you wish.

shouldnt be no need on sound old paint , if its not sound or a bit dodgy then i would roar it off back to at least the original paint or bare metal

No there the original panels, I was thinking of using epoxy primer. The paint currently on is sound, i have had to put some repair panels in on the rear arches, this will be flatted back to metal, I need to grind the welds down and fill over the area.

For the repair you are doing then epoxy primer is the best way.

Cellulose over OEM paint wouldn't need barcoat either, is used when you have old DIY paints on the panel, i.e. bodge jobs.
