Reforging a hammer into a hatchet is on my to do list, but I get attached before they get near the heat

I've seen hammers and the like fitted by heating the head and then the wooden shaft which has been whittled somewhere near is pushed into the hot head so that it burns the high points off. Obviously you don't want to be heating the head to the point where you are changing the properties of the steel.
Never had to do it myself mind you - I always go with wedges.
I do have a little hand axe that I use to split stuff for the wood-burner that I should probably re-handle. I can't remember where it came from but I think it's handle is an old chair leg from the look of it. I only ever use it as a splitting maul so the handle is to hold it whilst keeping my pinkies out of harms way whilst I apply some beating to it's rear face with a nylon hammer.
it also doesn't matter if there is another nearby, some jobs need "THE ONE" as you put it...Do you ever find no matter what your doing if you need a hammer you always go for "THE ONE" weather its your favourite, the first one you got ,dont matter if its the wrong one for the job in question, but that one has to be tried first.
Us men and hammers eh![]()
