With a sledge hammer I usually press the handles in a little at a time, so that the wood is shrunk into the head, I have never had one come loose,
but one idea I had was to drill down the centre and fit a long frame fixing screw down it, so that it went through the head and along into the shaft, one to replace the wedge and two to offer reinforcement to the shaft, to save it 'necking' itself. I have not tried it, but I have my 18lb er to re do might give it a go.

I've only got one hacksaw and I can't cut a straight line to save my life with it

I've seen hammers and the like fitted by heating the head and then the wooden shaft which has been whittled somewhere near is pushed into the hot head so that it burns the high points off. Obviously you don't want to be heating the head to the point where you are changing the properties of the steel.

Never had to do it myself mind you - I always go with wedges.

I do have a little hand axe that I use to split stuff for the wood-burner that I should probably re-handle. I can't remember where it came from but I think it's handle is an old chair leg from the look of it. I only ever use it as a splitting maul so the handle is to hold it whilst keeping my pinkies out of harms way whilst I apply some beating to it's rear face with a nylon hammer.

I just did a short shaft sledge for forging. Bought a full size shaft,cut it reshaped it slit it with hacksaw and made my own toothed wedge
It now a favourite and I can just about use it single handed if I need to

Do you ever find no matter what your doing if you need a hammer you always go for "THE ONE" weather its your favourite,the first one you got ,dont matter if its the wrong one for the job in question, but that one has to be tried first.

The old blacksmith who lived next to my mother used the heating method on spades and shovels. Never tried it myself

One of my favourites is a 7lb sledge that a numpty at work broke the hickory shaft at the head. I cut the splits off the shaft and refitted it to the head using the wooden/steel wedge method above. Its now about half the length of a sledge handle and so handy.
