Badly thought out fence and gate

Planning a quick fence with vehicle access gate. Something I can put up in a couple of days. Thinking 8 foot 4 inch concrete mortice posts sunk about 20 inches into the ground, 6 foot close boarded fence, and a pair of close boarded doors with 4 x 2 frame.

Problem is I want the door opening to be over 3m so I can get skip trucks and grabbers past them, so each door is going to be maybe 1.6m. Do you reckon 4 x 2 will be up to the job? Guess I'll need 3 horizontal to mount the boarding,and 2 vertical. Also do the posts sound up to the job?

I would use longer posts & bury them deeper. I wouldn't hang doors on posts that were only 20" into the ground either.

Two feet deep sounds very shallow, but I guess it depends on what sort of ground they're going into (think sand v gravel/rock) I'd guess @8ob will have a definitive recommendation...

As said above depends on ground condition & how open the site is to the elements but as a general rule you want about 1/3 buried in the ground so a 6 foot fence wants 3 foot in the ground.

That's good to know. A friend put up the fence along the side and I took a photo. About 22 inches down. Bit deeper for the gate posts then. Will have to get a soil extraction tool.

use yorkshire fencing better than close board allows wind to flow through it without pushing it over in gales

It's not an exposed location so wind shouldn't be a bother. Nice to match the fence and the vehicle access gate next door put in. Won't exactly match as they put theirs in squint and I'll need to put mine in squint in the other direction to clear the gas meter.

Thinking over a pedestrian door now. Once I've thought it out and ordered the materials should only be a couple days getting it up.

We get an old spade and bend the head of the spade 90degrees, L shape. Cut the bottom of the L to a size the will fit in the hole your digging. Hey presto a soil extraction tool!

me and @Burdekin used a vortex and vacuum to do the same thing

to pull out as much mess that had collected behind the framing and the good thing is, it worked really well

I wouldnt advise drilling through concrete posts at best you will either hit the metal rebar in them or at worst you will crack the concrete posts

if you intend to use wood then please use a h beam or an i beam in the ground at least you can drill the i beam and bolt the wood to it

on rear side just concrete your fence concrete post in with the beam

If the ground conditions allow I would add jockey wheels to both gates.

I have something similar on a miniature scale - a hacksaw blade from one of those Eclipse mini saws, snapped off one end and the first 5mm bent to roughly 90 deg. Perfect for digging out holes in concrete drilled to receive door bolts.

Depth for post is very ground condition dependant . As for hanging the gates I’d put a 100mm box in for a post at least 5mm tick . Very easy weld 2 strips of flat up the side for the timber to slot into . As regards width I’d go 4mtrs if you can . Iv worked for a few skip company’s and for every good driver there’s 2 useless ones that couldn care less so more room the better . As regards the gates I’d go 50x50 or 50x30 for material

might not be worth it for a couple of posts, but this is one of the best things I've bought. Over the last few years, it must have put in a few hundred fence posts / trees / plants round the farm now, clay ground too... different size bits, I've just about worn out the 80mm.... might be worth seeing if any of the rental places have them.... does the job in minutes...
