back gears

never had a lathe with back gears before, so not quite sure if mine work or not.

i know that they are supposed to slow the spindle speed down when engaged, but when I engage mine the spindle wont turn at all by hand. Is this normal? I haven't tried it under power het for fear of something breaking

There are two steps to engaging back gears that swing into mesh. You have to engagethe gears and then disengage the bull gear on the spindle. How that's done depends on the lathe. My atlas has a pin in the face of the bull gear that you pulled out about 1/4".

Yes engaging The back gear will make it much harder to turn, but not impossible.

My Raglan Little John lathe is similar to Petes Atlas and has a pin in the bull wheel pulled out through a finger slot in the rear of the head and a selection lever for the gears. Pulling the pin on mine without engaging the gears allows the chuck to spin freely which is useful for tapping internal threads and engaging the gears. Engaging the back gear alone locks the head which is useful for running a die by hand. Lord knows what Elf & Safety would make of that slot in the head with a pin flying past these days!

On my myford their is a small lever which has a Woodruff coupling the other side of the gear (lever on right and wr on left of gear)

Mine had the pulleys the other way around, the large one at the front of the spindle.
It had a nut and bolt which could be undone then slid in a slot in the face of the
pulley, that bolt was the 1:1 drive and had to be undone so you could put the drive
through the back gear.

that is how mine is done, forgot to update this post.

had a good look at it and found that in the larger gear on the spindle there was a bolt, undid this and engaged back gear and the spindle turns. Turned the motor on and the spindle is now much slower
