unfortunatley little birdie didnt make it i burried him with the two others that were in his nest.
thanks all for the comments and tips, i know he was just a wild bird with little chance of survival but it really hit me as i have been watching them for a couple of weeks

He wasn’t ‘just’ anything. Don’t ever apologise for feeling compassion for another living creature, we could do with more like that

That's a bit of a myth is that. The parents are very pragmatic and won't waste energy or food on weak chicks. I've put a chick back that fell out and the parents continued to raise it

Birds aren’t bothered by smell.
Pick up a deer kid/ calf/ fawn and some female deer will reject the youngster. Other female deer it doesn’t bother, Ive tagged wild kids and you see them months later with their mothers. I probably smell of deer which will help, I don’t use any smelly stuff on me or my work clothes.
Best advice is just don’t pick up young deer

If a ewe lost her lamb, Dad would likely skin the dead lamb and attach the skin to a lamb from another ewe, to avoid the bereaved ewe rejecting a replacement. Simple economics - the mother of the dead lamb could feed a replacement better than a ewe with triplets, for instance.

I know shepherds that put perfume on orphan lambs and on the adoptive ewes nose, to get them to accept each other
