I read Malcolms piece about the Axminster clamp which he favours.Any link to where this can be purchased,I looked on Axminster Power Tool site but as yet not found it.
I know some favour the screw clamp but when I was restoring my camper van I found I sometimes had to move earth clamp several times and personally would find unscrewing the clamp a bit of of a pain.This is only my opinion but admit i have never used a screw clamp so I may be wrong.
I have no doubt there is a post somewhere in the forum about welding long runs of metal but one of the jobs required welding two new back panels on over 3 feet long each!! Being a complete novice I would of just welded one long weld but a friend who restores cars told me the metal would be so buckled I would need about 2 tins of filler to get shape back.
The technique he told me to use was to weld about 2" at one end then 2" at the other,then a bit in the middle and so on,gradually build the length of weld up.This allowed metal to completely cool and I had minimum warp.
