Axle stands

Evenin all,
Just perusing ebay looking for some good ish axle stands, The descriptions of all the ratchet type state "cast iron support post" Is this right as cast can snap/shatter can't it?

I share your concerns. Call me old fashioned, but (despite the apparent convenience of the ratchet type stands) I personally don't think you can beat a good old heavy duty securing pin.

Recently, I bought a pair of Halfrauds 3 tonne stands. They're actually very well made and do inspire confidence.

their not designed for impact so not really a problem. Think about the weight you need to support and double it. most are 3 ton a pair so for cars vans its not a problem.

I've found the ratchet ones fine, but much prefer the wind up acme thread ones which I've only ever seen in Fletcher's "The Home of the Motorist" in Birmingham.

I've used both ratchet and securing pin type stands under Land Rovers for years without any concerns about security although I generally put a couple of wheels underneath "just in case".
The ratchet type ones seem well engineered and constructed, if you need to support something a bit higher I can recommend the "Melco" extra high stands from Machine Mart.

The clarke ratchet ones on that site are good for the money too
