my eldest 4 ( 10-14) arent interested in anything other than computers, but my youngest two ( 3 and 4 ) even have daddy at home clothes for my 4 days off.
cant keep them out of workshop, my 4yr old boy can name nearly all the equipment.
he as even made his mum a keyring out of an off cut of metal.
got daddy to help him drill hole then filed sides himself.
my little girl loves turning bandsaw on for me and as got an old engine with loose bolts so she can take bolts out.

she had a bracket she was taking bolt out of at time just looks like shes close to it.

I'm 30, And was given a stick welder for my 10th birthday, With my dad being a welder i suppose it was a natural progression!.
Weld and fab is all ive ever done (or want to do!)
And do duly agree that there isn't enough young interest.

I seem to remember thinking at school that I 'should' be good at metalwork as my dad was a car mechanic - thought processes of an 11-year-old eh!
As it turned out I was dire; even now I seem to find that the amount of time and effort that goes into a project is rarely reflected in the end product, guess I'm just impatient. Although I suppose never doing the same job twice doesn't help - I guess if I fitted bathrooms all week I'd soon get good at it.
I work on the principle that I've never earned enough money to pay other people so I'll give a job a go myself. I have mates who have got to the opposite end of the spectrum: they earn so much money they'd rather pay someone else than use their time or get hands dirty!
My old man showed me the basics of gas welding when I was 12; I used to help him work on cars so had gearboxes and engines in bits before I left school but it wasn't what I wanted to do for a living.
The necessities of keeping old wrecks on the road as transport helped my toolkit grow, then I got into bikes and TVRs, then I decided I 'needed' a MIG welder, then a lathe... and you can't have a lathe without a mill, and who can call themself an engineer if they can't TIG-weld... - and so it goes on.
My grandsons are 4 and 6, I'm looking forward to the day when I can plonk them in front of the the Boxford and get them making swarf

The poll is showing a pretty even spread of ages from 20 - -64 yrs/
I am in the minority as I will be 67 in two weeks time.
Nice to see so many younger folks are still interested in being hands on with mechanics and fabrication etc.
