Ive just supplied some gate automation to a customer , I dont get involved with electrics so his electrician had a look and now says he cant fit them because hes not a registered installer , is this the case ? does the installer have to be registered and if so to what, where and whom ?

I don't think there is such a register.

The force of the gates closing need to comply with BS EN 12453:2001..some info here

I think you can hire the gear to test the forces

I've done a bit of work for someone over the last year retrofitting safe edges and covering sliding gates in mesh so there are no bits that will cut someones arm off.

probably means part p installer . just an excuse to get out of doing them and probably cant wire them anyhow -

I have supplied Came Gate Frogs with all the necessary safety bits and bobs , should be ok !

There is a group called " Gate Safe " they want laws changed on gates as some children have been killed , but I dont think there is a registered body ???

We use CAME motor drives on lead-lined sliding doors; we fit light curtains either side so if you break the beams the door goes into reverse to avoid trapping you.
I could see swing gates being a bit more problematic...

Also, if you give either a decent explanation of the positioning of work to be installed they will be more than happy to tell you exactly what safety measures are required.

The sliding gates are potentially the most dangerous imo, as they slide between guide posts which can snap a stray hand without the correct safety edging in place.

I've given up on automation now, there are often silly little niggles that require a call out after installation. But that could be down to the electrician I use.

The CAME drives we use are the squat grey floor-mounted boxes with a releasable clutch... we had a string of electrical failures about 8-10 years ago and CAME introduced a revised PCB that seems to have cured them. Just as well as all of ours are on military sites, most of which are 300+ miles from the office so a callout is a bit of a bu993r

I have got the Frog J floor type , I dont do electrical , told the customer that but I supplied them , his electrician says he is not a registered installer of gate automation so he cant do the job , he said we would have to find a registered installer , customer panicking , wants me to take the kit back , then find a registered installer to do the job with them supplying the kit.

Do the installation details not demand an installer that is registered with the company or any future guarantee is void, perhaps that's what he is saying....just a guess.

I have fitted loads of systems and looked at the links (thanks Wyn) for the legislation. While I was doing it the only rule was, that if the client didn't want the 'in movement' warning light, he had to sign a waiver, don't remember it ever happening.
Swing gates always had pressure clutches that one would set to provide enough closing force to overcome wind loads, but not enough to hurt someone caught in them. The hydraulic units just stalled, the electric ones reversed. To cover the swept area, a second set of I-R units were mounted at the limit of the radius when open. Break the beam and the gates reversed and stayed open. Esp important if they opened outwards.
No surprise about the legislation, the crush death of the child was completely avoidable. Leaving the gate operational by the public without setting the clutches, well.....
